Sensory Stories: 77% of people add spice to their food. Are you one? The way in which we cook and eat is dependent on the senses of taste and smell. Our appreciation (or not) of food is reliant on these senses. It is widely known that if you cannot smell what you are about to eat (due to blocked nodes), food is far less appetising and enjoyable. How can you remember smells? How long do you think it takes to distinguish one smell from another? Sensory Consultant Yvonne Spethmann from KIN Food institute wrote in a recent article that human senses are still very important in ensuring the quality of food and, besides appearance, taste and consistency, the factor smell, or odour, can be directly linked to a pleasant or unpleasant experience when eating food. Thus, helping one categorize whether certain food is good or if it’s gone spoiled. In one of our surveys, a panellists affirmed that the experiences with good or bad smell are normally linked to emotions and feelings. I.eg., the smell of sunscreen makes one think about warm weather and holidays, while the smell of spoiled chicken, may lead the person to a state of unwellness. Want to better read yourself? Here's how👇🏼 Imagine that you’re learning how to cook. The process would require you to cultivate sensitivity in your palette that senses six basic tastes — sweet, sour, salty, bitter, savory, and umami. Along these lines, our interoceptive palette includes: - Mental (racing thoughts or foggy vs. calm and alert) - Awareness (expanded and receptive vs. narrow and protective) - Posture (open and relaxed vs. tense and collapsed) - Breath (deep, slow, and soft vs. shallow and rapid) - Emotion (gratitude, joy, sadness, etc.) Just as with a chef composing a five-course tasting menu, there is an infinite number of flavor permutations within these categories. As with training your flavor palette, interoception is a skill that can be cultivated through curiosity and intentional experimentation. There are three experiments you can make to build your own interoceptive capacity. 📍Read more about it here https://lnkd.in/d5kmxQDQ #wellbeing #physicalandmentalhealth #holisticwellness #mentalfitness

Would you rather lose your sense of taste or your sense of smell? If I had to choose between losing my sense of smell or sense of taste, I would definitely choose to lose my sense of smell. I am a big foodie, and I really enjoy tasting different foods and flavors, so losing my sense of taste would be a nightmare for me. On the other hand, losing my sense of smell might not be as disruptive to my daily life. While smell is important for certain things like detecting danger or enjoying certain aromas, I think I would be able to cope with that loss much more easily than losing my sense of taste.
