Robotic-assisted knee replacement involves the surgeon using a robotic arm to assist in planning and placing the knee replacement components. Robotic-assisted knee replacement surgery is still relatively new, so there is no clear evidence to suggest it is superior to other methods of knee replacement positioning in terms of post-operative function and prosthesis survival. Like all treatment approaches, it has its pros and cons. Its benefits include: 👉 Greater accuracy in pre-op planning, bone cuts, and prosthesis placement 👉 Reduction in errors and outliers 👉 Ability to ‘recut’ intra-operatively with accuracy. The main disadvantages are: 👉 Cost – robots are prohibitively expensive! 👉 Need for more pre-op imagery 👉 Its newness – any new surgical technology needs to be carefully studied and surgeons need to be appropriately trained before it becomes more widely used. In total knee arthroplasty (TKA), 3D preoperative planning is essential because it allows for personalized surgical plans that accommodate individual anatomical differences, improving the precision and accuracy of implant placement. This enhanced planning leads to better alignment and fit of the implant, which are critical for the longevity of the prosthesis and optimal functioning of the knee joint. Moreover, it helps in reducing intraoperative errors, potentially shortens surgical time, and can lead to quicker patient recovery.
