Our latest article, "The nexus of transportation, the built environment, air pollution, and health," has been published in the Cities & Health journal. Led by Haneen Khreis, this work explores the complex interactions between transportation infrastructure, urban design, air quality, and public health. The paper delves into the nexus between on-road transportation and the built environment, examining their impacts on air pollution exposure, interactions with physical activity, and overall health. We review the literature from 2010 onwards, highlighting current knowledge, key concepts, recent advances, remaining gaps, and future directions for research. https://lnkd.in/ezr9j7CE

It's an excitement to share that a new research paper, “Modeling the Impact of Socio-Economic and Environmental Factors on Air Quality in the City of Kabul,” has been published in one of the most prestigious journals of this field: Sustainability journal of MDPI (Q1, Scopus-indexed). This study addresses one of Kabul’s most pressing challenges: air pollution. Leveraging socio-economic and environmental data, satellite imagery, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), the paper explores the relationship between air quality and key factors such as urban green spaces, population growth, vehicle count, and temperature. Key Findings: • Expanding urban green spaces significantly improves air quality. • Rapid population growth and rising temperatures exacerbate pollution levels. • Effective emissions management, adoption of green energy, and strategic urban planning can mitigate airborne pollutants and enhance public health. Science of the Total Environment 914 (2024) 169883.https://https://lnkd.in/gEsKPuMp Air pollution is a global environmental concern that poses a significant threat to human health. In addressing the global concern of air pollution and its significant impact on human health, our study underscores the imperative for strategic green planning amidst urbanization and climate change to improve air quality. Examining 73 in-situ stations in Taiwan across dry and wet seasons from 2015 to 2020, the research delves into the intricate relationships between greenspace patterns and outdoor air. The methodology employs Partial Least Squares – Structural Equation Modeling, focusing on seven dimensions: greenspace, gaseous pollutants, particle pollutants, Ozone, air temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed. The findings reveal seven landscape metrics as potential greenness indicators for urban planning. We are pleased about the opportunity to contribute to the scientific community and address critical environmental challenges.

Great to see this paper by Toon Haer and me published just before the year’s end! In this study we provide a multi-hazard perspective on equitable adaptation across various hazard types and multi-hazard events. We identify challenges for hazards based on magnitude (intensive vs. extensive), onset (rapid vs. slow), and for compound and consecutive events. To support equitable, multi-risk adaptation decisions, methods must integratively capture the complexities of social and environmental systems, especially regarding consecutive and compounding events. https://lnkd.in/e2dxfj8Z

Soils in Europe are in a critical state 🌱🚨 Every year, 1 billion tonnes of soil in Europe are affected by erosion, with water erosion being the most widespread type. Nutrient imbalances are also on the rise, affecting 74% of agricultural lands. Organic carbon, which is essential to keep soil healthy, is decreasing rapidly. These are just few of the findings of our latest report on the state of soils in Europe – a collaboration between the Joint Research Centre and the EEA. Swipe ➡️ to see more data.
