"A group of 17 Democratic senators is calling on the #Biden administration to reject #Israel’s claims that it is not violating #internationallaw by restricting #humanitarianaid amid a growing debate in Washington over whether the United States should suspend arms transfers to the government of Prime Minister Benjamin #Netanyahu." The House and Senate foreign affairs/relations committees should be exercising close oversight on this issue, amidst the fog of war, the strong pressures on the Biden administration to make a relatively favorable or unfavorable assessment on the question of whether Israel is adhering to the laws of war, and the broader consequences to US national security, regional stability, and the risk of increasing US military re-entanglement in the region, which is affected in part by international perceptions of the relative justness and moderation of US foreign policy. There may not be any reason for optimism at present on US-Iran-Israel relations but that doesn't mean the US should contribute to provoking the confrontation some Israeli leaders would like (primarily American forces) to have with #Iran. The world is volatile enough as it is--all the more reason to ensure to whatever extent practically possible that that course of action is kept a true last resort. #Gaza #Rafah #Palestinians

West must come to terms with Myanmar's fragmentation This article advocates stronger international support for the resistance in Myanmar. Please read this article and send it your local political contact. Excerpts The country's diverse resistance groups, though, are not waiting for a perfect solution. They are already working on the ground to do as much good as they can, wherever they can. International donors should not wait either. To more effectively support the Myanmar people, Western governments and like-minded actors need to come to terms with the reality of an increasingly fragmented state that may never be put back together again. With the military retreating, resistance groups have started building parallel state structures and delivering public services in "liberated areas" free of central control, much like the largest ethnic armed organizations have done since the 1960s. These various groups are no longer just defending local communities but increasingly also governing millions of people.
