March is National Developmental Disabilities Month, and as a Mental Health thought leader, I acknowledge that many individuals with mental illness also suffer from developmental disabilities. The US Surgeon General recently declared loneliness as a national mental health epidemic, making it clear that it's time for the Medical and Healthcare Innovations space to shift focus towards mental health treatment. Let's explore more innovations in telepsychiatry, virtual psychotherapy, and psychiatric home health services. With these innovations, we can make mental health a top priority in healthcare. I'm eager to learn more about these types of innovations, and I invite you to join me in this critical conversation. Let's work together to make a positive impact on the mental health community. Join me in recognizing #NationalDevelopmentalDisabilitiesMonth and advocating for better mental health treatment. #MentalHealth #HealthcareInnovations #Telepsychiatry #VirtualPsychotherapy #HomeHealthServices

October is Depression Awareness Month At QLER Telepsychiatry (pronounced like Clear), we’re not just raising awareness, we’re taking action to transform behavioral health care in emergency departments nationwide. Did you know that over 21 million U.S. adults experience major depressive disorder every year? And yet, many face long waits in the ER for psychiatric care. Our timely, virtual psych consults help reduce those wait times, cut down on boarding, and save significant costs. In fact, hospitals see an average 4 to 1 return on investment, with our service paying for itself in as little as six months. We’re here to make a difference not just in patient care, but in the financial health of our healthcare system. Let’s continue advocating for mental health and better outcomes for all. Visit Mental Health America for more information and resources. MHA’s website as well as QLER’s can be found in the comments. #DepressionAwarenessMonth #MentalHealthMatters #Telepsychiatry #HealthcareInnovation #BehavioralHealth

Telehealth saves lives! At Shanti Recovery and Wellness, we're proud to offer virtual mental health services for our busy addiction treatment patients. From the article: "Greater use of virtual mental health care services was linked to a lower risk of suicide-related events, according to a retrospective cohort study. The study of more than 16,000 veterans with prior mental health diagnoses showed that a 1% increase in the proportion of mental health care received through telehealth services was associated with a 2.5% decrease in suicide-related events, Kertu Tenso, PhD, of Boston University School of Public Health, and co-authors reported in JAMA Network." https://lnkd.in/gTB99WCD #MentalHealth #PsychiatryNews #HealthcareUpdates #PatientCare #BehavioralHealth #addictiontreatment #healthcare #Portland #Oregon

We have GOT to talk about mental health & the carceral state. Period. I did not hear "policing," "carcerality," or "the carceral state" mentioned once during my 13 years of medical and mental health training. This feels clinically negligent for mental health crisis management, given its close interrelation with policing, which can be fatal. Throughout medical training, I was trained to coerce and control people without much of any ethical or moral consideration of what was at stake for people of all ages. Medical training needs critical thinking, not blind acceptance of standards of "care" contributing to the U.S. having worst health outcomes overall of any high-income nation (https://lnkd.in/dC9Xi5Sr). Mental health crisis management that saves lives and protects people against policing also requires transformative training opportunities that confront, rather than ignore, how healthcare providers are trained to become automatons of the carceral state. Please watch the amazing full-length webinar led by Karli Montague-Cardoso, PhD through PLOS Mental Health featuring my recent paper "Reconsidering Calling 911: Is It Time to Set a New Standard for Crisis Management" here: https://lnkd.in/d--DhsfX You can find the paper here: https://lnkd.in/ghktyphT #mentalhealth #crisismanagement #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthawareness #antiracism #antiracist #psychiatrist #psychiatry

In the 1960s, the Antipsychiatry Movement emerged that shook the foundations of mental health care. It challenged us to rethink what we consider 'normal' and 'sane.' RD Laing's radical vision flipped the script on mental health. What if our 'breakdowns' are really breakthroughs in disguise? Maybe it's time we questioned the answers we've been given. On this World Patient Safety Day, which in the year 2024 highlights the importance of improving diagnosis for patient safety, QPSR takes a look at the evolution of diagnostic labels in the arena of mental health and the larger social impact of the same. As we continue to evolve our understanding of mental health, Laing's ideas remind us to look beyond labels and see the human experience in all its complexity. #Antipsychiatry #MentalHealthAwareness #RDLaing #PsychologyHistory #RadicalThinking #MentalWellbeing

Did you know that one in five teens experience a “major depressive disorder,” but less than half of them have access to care? Mental health is as crucial as, if not sometimes more so, your physical health. However, access to mental health resources can be strained, depending on where you live. Illinois is one state that is testing out a solution with online giant Google to increase accessibility to such sources: https://lnkd.in/gdF9eiGb #mentalhealthawarenessmonth #mentalhealthmatters

Four years since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, new data shows how severely the pandemic impacted young people's mental health, particularly girls. During the pandemic, there was an increase in severe emergency room psychiatric visits for children and teens, including for conditions like bipolar disorder, substance abuse disorders, and schizophrenia, according to research published in the journal Academic Emergency Medicine. In addition, mental health-related emergency room visits increased "beyond expected rates" for girls near the end of the pandemic, from 2021 to 2022, according to the research. Beyond Clinical Walls: New Approaches in Mental Health Care Mental health services often fail marginalized communities, highlighting the need for inclusive care models. Peer support and community health worker programs are effective but underutilized in clinical settings. Combining community wisdom and evidence-based practices can enhance mental health support and preventive care. Reflecting on her journey, a child psychiatrist shared her personal and professional experiences, emphasizing the importance of community in mental health care. She recognized early signs of anxiety and depression in herself, which were managed through therapy and medication. However, the traditional medical model, with its long-term therapy requirements and medication focus, often falls short. To bridge these gaps, she advocates for integrating community-based programs into mental health services. Peer-to-peer support, credible messengers, and community health workers have proven effective but need wider implementation. By leveraging community strengths and clinical expertise, we can create more accessible and supportive mental health systems, particularly for those traditionally excluded from care. https://lnkd.in/gMMy3zrJ #MentalHealth #CommunityCare #InclusiveHealth #PeerSupport #HealthEquity #PreventiveCare #MentalWellness #MentalHealthAwareness #SupportSystems #Psychiatry #CommunityHealth
