Trauma informed. It sounds good but that term isn’t well understood by the general public and has been diluted by the wellness community by click bait, quick buck certifications. There’s an assumption that because yoga is often recommended for ptsd, chronic pain, anxiety and depression that any and all yoga is trauma informed and that is simply not true. Today on The Work IN we’re taking a look at what being trauma informed means, what it looks like in yoga classes and why it’s something that all fit pros should understand. Today's discussion is going to focus on yoga but it applies across the fitness industry to all formats. The Work IN is for resilient wellness professionals who want to expand their professional credibility, shake off stress and thrive in a burnout-proof career with conversations on the fitness industry, movement, nutrition, sleep, mindset, nervous system health, yoga, business and so much more. A huge part of calming your body is movement. A run, walk, swim, cycle, dance or yoga session, etc can help soothe your mind. It’s a way of strengthening your heart, wellbeing and mind. Find something and do something that results you in being happy. Exercising for me has changed over the years. I started running back in 2018 to better my fitness. Now I exercise for my mental fitness because it aligns my head, pumps my heart and releases endorphins. To me it’s calming. Recently I was injured that resulted in no running, I got back to reading but I was missing the release of endorphins which really impacted my mental health personally and at work. Every little situation built up into one huge ball and I broke. Now slowly making my way back into exercising and taking a walk before work, I’ve noticed a change. The smallest run can put a smile on my face and walking to relaxing music is so peaceful and calming. I’ve stopped religiously staring at my strava predicted stats and splits trying to focus on speed and comparing myself to others and now all I focus on now is whether my run or exercise has benefited my mental wellbeing. Focusing on me, myself and I. No matter who you are and where you are mentally, go for a walk, run, cycle, etc. Move your body and see how much of a difference it will make you feel after. You may not see it straight away but add it to your routine and do it regularly and you will see a difference. We all know that staying active is great for our bodies, but did you know it works wonders for your mind too? Research shows that regular exercise can reduce feelings of depression, anxiety, and stress, while also boosting our mood and self-esteem. Here are a few types of exercises and how they can help: 🏃♀️ Aerobic Exercise: Whether it’s running, swimming, or cycling, these activities get your heart pumping and release feel-good endorphins. They're a great way to lift your spirits and keep anxiety in check. 🏋️♂️*Strength Training: Lifting weights or doing resistance exercises isn’t just for building muscle. It can help reduce anxiety and make you feel accomplished, boosting your self-esteem along the way. 🧘♀️ Mind-Body Exercises: Yoga, Tai Chi, or anything that blends movement with mindfulness is a double win! You’ll improve flexibility, balance, and strength while also finding a sense of calm and mental clarity. Not sure where to start? Start small - even a 5-minute walk is a great way to begin… Focus on consistency over intensity. Regular, moderate exercise is key to long-term benefits. Make it part of your day. Take the stairs, walk to work, or do some quick stretches at home. Keep it simple. You don’t need fancy equipment – even household items can be used for strength training. How can you be more active? Pick two activities you enjoy or have always wanted to try and make a plan to include them in your weekly routine. Remember to always consult your doctor before making any changes.
