While it may seem like practical experience is a prerequisite for landing jobs in HR or L&D, many professionals have secured roles through a combination of education, networking, internships, and demonstrating transferable skills. However, here are some real-life observations supporting the notion that practical experience is often crucial: 1. Job Descriptions Prioritize Experience Many HR and L&D job postings explicitly require 2–5 years of practical experience in similar roles. For instance, roles like HR Generalist or Training Coordinator often list "hands-on experience with HR software" or "proven track record of training facilitation" as non-negotiable. 2. Skill Validation through Practical Application Employers often prefer candidates who have handled real-world challenges, such as resolving employee grievances, conducting training sessions, or implementing learning strategies, as it reduces the training time for new hires. 3. Hiring Managers' Expectations Professionals with only academic knowledge are often passed over because hiring managers view practical experience as evidence of problem-solving, communication, and adaptability skills. 4. The Internship-to-Job Pipeline Many HR/L&D professionals start with internships or entry-level roles (like HR Assistant) to gain experience. For example, interns who show potential are often converted to full-time employees. 5. Case Studies A LinkedIn survey of HR professionals revealed that those with internships or part-time HR-related roles were 70% more likely to land an HR role compared to those with only academic qualifications. Many job seekers share stories of being rejected repeatedly for "lack of experience," despite having certifications or degrees, until they secured an internship or volunteer role. 6. Entry Barriers for Fresh Graduates In competitive markets, employers tend to favor candidates with hands-on experience, as seen in sectors like IT hiring HR professionals with specific software skills (e.g., HRIS or LMS). If you're entering HR or L&D, gaining practical exposure through internships, volunteering for HR projects, or freelance L&D work can bridge the gap between theory and real-world application.
