International Transport of Hydrogen
The increasing volume of hydrogen transport has led to a growing number of proposed amendments to the land mode transport regulations #RID and #ADR.
Experts from #BAM continuously support the German delegation, led by the #BMDV, with their substantial expertise and scientific contributions rooted in pre-regulatory research.
These biannual discussions result in numerous regulatory updates, including the recent September-session in Geneva, where several changes were discussed, and some adopted. These improvements will have a significant impact on hydrogen and gas transport across Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia.
BAM remains committed to ensuring that these developments lead to safe and sustainable transport solutions for hydrogen and all other gases.

German Economy Minister Habeck is proposing loosening the rules in hydrogen. https://lnkd.in/ejkfhN9y
But the key metric should not be the cost of hydrogen itself but the cost of carbon avoided by using hydrogen. By loosening rules on temporal correlation or additionality one is simply moving emissions from the end user to the producer of hydrogen as the the rules would allow either use of fossil fuel grid electricity to count as zero emissions, or could displace current demand for renewable electricity so that it relies on additional fossil fuel generation. The loosening of the rules would also favour Germany, which has a dirty electricity grid, over countries with cleaner grids such as Sweden, France, Denmark or Finland as it would enable Germany to claim its hydrogen met the standards even though in reality its hydrogen would have much higher GHG intensity. As hydrogen is subsidised what Habeck is proposing is that relatively 'dirtier' hydrogen in Germany should be allowed to receive state aid in the same way as 'cleaner' hydrogen elsewhere. Proper measurement of hydrogen GHG intensity would allow comparison between countries on a more robust basis. For more explanation see here: https://lnkd.in/e32B-sDm

🇩🇪🇪🇺 Letter from German minister Robert Habeck to commissioner Kadri Simson on the need to review the #RFNBO Delegated Act
🔹Despite considerable efforts, the #hydrogen market is not yet developing as desired
🔹Support and sufficient flexibility must continue, enabling cost-efficient production of #greenhydrogen
🔹Delegated Act 2023/1184 for the definition and production of RFNBOs is a key element; though it was a compromise resulting from long negotiations, companies complain that it does not allow for the economic realisation of #electrolysis projects in Germany
📈 The specifications would increase the cost of producing hydrogen by around 2.40 €/kg 💰
🎯 Proposals to eliminate this obstacle:
👉 Extend the phase-in period for #additionality until 2035, and do it as quickly as possible
👉 Extend the phase-in period for temporal correlation until 31 Dec2030
👉 This is also linked to the viability of #lowcarbonhydrogen
👉 In addition, it would be important to use technical requirements outside the delegated acts to ensure that #electrolysers are flexible and compatible with the system in order to integrate well and cost-effectively into the energy system and become part of the overall solution

Germany raises concerns! Minister Robert Habeck calls for urgent revisions to the #RFNBO Delegated Act, highlighting real-world hydrogen market struggles and unsustainable cost increases. Is it time for the EU to step off the drawing board and confront the impact on #greenhydrogen? Many hope the policymakers will finally ground their vision in reality.

At ADIPEC 2024, Ulf Heitmüller, CEO, VNG AG, called for a more practical approach when it comes to regulating hydrogen markets:
“From a very practical point of view - at least for the EU - one thing I would really highlight is that we get more pragmatic around the regulation side of it - the specifications, and specifically, also accept that blue hydrogen will have a role to play in this”.
Next year's ADIPEC will take place 3-6 November 2025 in Abu Dhabi.

ENERGY PERFORMANCE CONTRACTING (EPC) in Water Segment.
📈 Continuing the topic of energy contracts - company DNBV represents in NL and EU a project CAVITECH, supplying innovative aeration equipment for WWTPs.
! High-quality water purification, oxygen levels 2-3 times more effective then analogues. CAVITECH offers recycled water to meet at least 50% of agricultural water needs.
💡 Supply of CAVITECH under EPC - is an opportunity for WWTPs to get an innovative equipment and modernization:
- with a trial period
- without interrupting current work
- with no financial risk

Net carbon positive hydrogen??
This project has so so many applications and the cost reductions of being able to use waste water and fluctuating renewable energy pushes the practicality of use in real life.
This is the start of on premise generation of 100% green hydrogen with additional positive impacts on environmental impacts on waste water.
Waste streams contribute to Scope 3 emissions - we need to do the calculations to see this through to being net carbon positive hydrogen source

To support the development of the European #hydrogen market, the European Commission has started work on a pilot mechanism that aims to accelerate #investments by providing a “clearer” picture of the market situation of both off-takers and suppliers and facilitating contacts between them.
With the consistent development of green hydrogen as clean energy source and the water essentiality for green hydrogen production. As the market matures
, crucial questions about the use of water are starting to arise. How much water is needed? What quality is sufficient? Where should the water come from?
What is the economics of green hydrogen as energy source?
