Empowering Uganda, One Community at a Time As a young IT student from Uganda, I've witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of poverty, hunger, and limited access to healthcare. But I believe that together, we can create a brighter future for my community. The Challenges We Face: Uganda, a beautiful country in East Africa, is home to over 50 million people. Despite its natural resources and resilient population, Uganda faces numerous challenges, including: 1. Food insecurity: Droughts and poor farming practices leave many without access to nutritious food. 2. Waterborne illnesses: Contaminated water sources spread diseases like cholera and typhoid. 3. Inaccessible healthcare: Corruption and limited resources deny many Ugandans essential medical care. My Vision: I'm working to establish initiatives that promote environmental conservation, improve food and water security, and enhance access to healthcare. My goal is to empower Ugandan communities to thrive, ensuring that everyone has access to the resources they need to live a healthy, productive life. Our Projects: We're launching several projects to address the challenges facing Ugandan communities: 1. Sustainable Agriculture: We're promoting sustainable farming practices, providing training and resources to local farmers. 2. Clean Water Initiative: We're working to provide access to clean water, constructing boreholes and promoting water conservation practices. 3. Healthcare Access: We're partnering with local healthcare providers to enhance access to medical care, focusing on maternal and child health. 🌍 Proposed Projects for Partnerships in Uganda 🌍 Nashaa Aid and Development Initiative is committed to empowering vulnerable communities in Uganda through sustainable and impactful programs. By partnering with local, international, and regional organizations, we can address critical challenges in areas such as education, health, economic empowerment, and community development. Together, we can create lasting change in Uganda’s marginalized regions. Here are some of the proposed projects we are eager to implement with your partnership: 1. Education & Youth Empowerment Programs: Objective: To ensure access to quality education and skill development for underprivileged children and youth in rural and refugee-hosting areas. Activities: Establishing schools and after-school programs for children in vulnerable communities, providing school supplies, and offering vocational training for youth, focusing on skills like ICT, agriculture, and entrepreneurship. We aim to collaborate with partners to equip youth with the tools they need to succeed and break the cycle of poverty. 2. Women’s Economic Empowerment & Social Support Programs: Objective: To empower women, particularly those in refugee settlements and rural areas, through economic opportunities and psychosocial support. Activities: Implementing livelihood training programs for women in areas such as agriculture, tailoring, and small-scale business. Additionally, we aim to establish savings and loan groups to help women start their own businesses. With partners, we can offer these women the support and resources they need to improve their economic independence and well-being. 3. Sustainable Agriculture & Food Security Projects: Objective: To promote food security and resilience in farming communities affected by climate change and economic hardships. Activities: Introducing climate-smart agriculture practices, training farmers on sustainable farming methods, and providing tools and resources like drought-resistant seeds. We also aim to create agricultural cooperatives that allow farmers to share knowledge and resources. Regional and international partners can help scale this initiative and address the growing food security concerns in Uganda. At Nashaa Aid and Development Initiative, we believe that by working together, we can implement these programs to uplift communities in Uganda. From empowering women and youth to addressing food security and healthcare needs, these projects are designed to have a lasting impact. Today in Nairobi, Kenya, the Zero Hunger Coalition is participating in the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH Partners for Change Conference. 🌍   Representatives from Madagascar and Zambia will participate in panel discussions where they will discuss the results of their Evidence-based and costed roadmaps, developed with the Zero Hunger Coalition, and the next steps towards implementation. ⏭️   In addition, representatives from Bangladesh, with whom the Coalition is also developing a roadmap, are also attending as well as members of the Coalition’s Advisory Group.   🗣 Francine Picard, who leads the coordination team for the Zero Hunger Coalition, spoke during the opening panel.  "Each bite of food we eat is the end product of a chain of interconnected events. These events are not only impacting our ecological, economic and social systems but also impacted by them. FACT: Burundi is a low-income country, with over 80% of its population working in agriculture. 🥬 FACT: In 2019, a study by the National Bank of Burundi revealed a stark reality: only 2% of loans from microfinance institutions supported the agricultural sector. 💰 ACTION: Cordaid Burundi launched the Rural Innovative Finance Development Support Project (PADFIR). This year’s #WWWeek was again a great opportunity to interact with several stakeholders to dicuss about #WATER. Among those, had a great pleasure to converse with His Excellency Mr. Sam Mangusho Cheptori, the Minister of Water & Environment & member of parliament, Rep. of #Uganda over the current status, #challenges and #opportunities for water treatment and enabling access to clean water. #UnivarSolutions has an export business for water treatment chemicals to Africa and actively looking into the opportunities to join forces with other organizations to support not only Uganda, but also other countries in that region to deliver #innovative #products and solutions to improve #water #quality. ————————- PS: Just to highlight the potential impact, would like to share some striking information: Much of Uganda is open water and swampland, but this water is undrinkable while suffering from the shortages of clean groundwater. Moreover, facilities are under strain in towns and cities, and the springs and wells that rural communities rely on are mostly used up. Out of its population of 47 million people, 38 million people (81% of the population) lack access to safe water. Uganda has experienced two decades of economic growth, leading to large population movements from rural areas to informal settlements around urban centers. High population growth stresses the water and sanitation services that exist. Further, urban people living in poverty pay as much as 22% of their income to access water from water vendors. Spending such a high percentage of earnings on water reduces overall household income, limiting opportunities to build savings and break the cycle of poverty. And many families living in rural areas spend more than 30 minutes walking to collect the water their families need, taking time away from work and school. Despite all these, there is positive momentum as the government of Uganda aims to have safe water and improved sanitation for everyone by 2030.

🔆 Cordaid Rwanda: Reducing poverty and improving food security through KWIIP 2 Porject 🌾 🌤 In the drought-prone areas of Kayonza District, Eastern Province, Rwanda, poverty and food insecurity have long been a challenge. 💹 The Kayonza Irrigation and Integrated Watershed Management Project (KIIWP 2) aims to transform the lives of rural households by improving food security and income. As a partner in this initiative, Cordaid is dedicated to supporting farm business development, connecting farmers to markets, and providing access to financial services. 💰 🔝 Our goal is ambitious: 💡 To reach 40,000 rural households, 💡 empowering 180,000 individuals, with a special focus on women and youth. 📍 We envision a future where agriculture is a thriving business, and rural communities are resilient and strong. The approaches, the concepts and the methodologies. Livelihood in a simple term entails the whole systems that actively interact to give a room for adequate and satisfactory income for sustainable life. This is placed this way, because, many things are involved in livelihood development. The role of individuals and organisations in livelihood development can not be exhaustively discussed. Not even here. However, l want us to collaboratively see how many organisations can be dragged in and also have those who are already doing something to to more. Without telling you that l have all the ideas, the following are key ways your organization can help in livelihood development in Africa toward household poverty reduction; 1, Proper research through deployment of right skills and techs 2. Capacity building on resource management through efficient awareness creation on hunger eradication in Africa. 3. Advocacy and team building for workable techniques towards individual household empowerment. 5. Aggressive fund raising for livelihood models implementation sponsorship. 6. Supporting policies on livelihood development 7. Encouraging technology in agriculture that can help efficient and effective productivity, eg, Farm Monitor Africa tech initiatives. Realizing that only health communities can effectively participate in livelihood interventions including income generating activities, ActionAid Malawi is mainstreaming nutrition in its FARMSE-Tipindule Project. Here is a video of how it is done in Mwanza, one of the project’s impact districts. ActionAid Malawi is implementing the Tipindule Project to improve access to and use of affordable and sustainable financial services for rural households and micro, small, and medium enterprises targeting 37,500 beneficiaries in Salima, Dedza, Ntcheu, Neno and Mwanza.  

Despite significant progress, food insecurity remains a pressing challenge in Rwanda, with 48.7% of the rural population and 22.1% of urban dwellers affected. These numbers serve as a stark reminder that our work is far from over, and more concerted efforts are needed to effectively reduce hunger and achieve the Sustainable Development Goal of Zero Hunger (SDG 2). At Walisha, we are committed to filling the gaps and ensuring a brighter, food-secure future for all Rwandans. Through our Productivity Enhancement and Market Access programs, we are increasing access to resources, fostering cross-sector collaboration, and tackling the barriers head-on. However, we cannot do this alone. Ending hunger requires a unified movement, a collective effort that transcends borders and brings together stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
