Grit, that combination of passion and perseverance championed by Angela Duckworth, can take us to places we’d not otherwise get to. But is it always enough? Lucy, one of my coaching clients, learned that sometimes grit needs to be paired with something softer: curiosity, vulnerability, and self-compassion. Lucy came to me burned out, questioning her identity as a leader. Her grit had gotten her through tough professional and personal challenges, but now it was driving a wedge between her and her colleagues. Grit had literally become her overused strength…and then a weakness. Junior colleagues in particular were put off by her blunt communication style. At a crossroads, Lucy did the most courageous thing, and agreed to experiment with putting down her gritty armour. She leaned into that discomfort, opened herself to feedback, and redefined leadership on her terms—leading with connection and compassion instead of defensiveness. The biggest shift wasn’t just external; it was internal. By learning to be kinder to herself, Lucy became a kinder and more effective leader for her team. True grit isn’t just about persevering. It’s about adapting. It’s about knowing when to pivot. Where might you need to reimagine your approach? #LeadershipCoaching #Grit #SelfCompassion

Three years ago, I took on the 75 Hard challenge to build mental strength and resilience. In typical fashion, I chose bowls season to complete it—because why not add another layer of difficulty, right? This weekend, I had the pleasure of catching up with the amazing group of people who completed the challenge alongside me. Reflecting on how much we’ve all grown since then was a powerful reminder of the value of perseverance, self-discipline, and self-reflection. As I look back, it’s clear how much these lessons apply to leadership at work. Leadership isn’t just about guiding others—it’s about pushing yourself to grow, even when the circumstances aren’t perfect. It’s about facing challenges head-on, learning from them, and becoming a better version of yourself along the way. The experience taught me that resilience and mental strength aren’t built overnight but are the result of consistent effort and reflection. Just like in 75 Hard, leadership requires discipline, self-awareness, and the willingness to stretch beyond your comfort zone. Here’s to continuous growth—personally and professionally! #Leadership #GrowthMindset #Resilience #75Hard #SelfReflection #MentalStrength

“I’m not loving my life” “I don’t like who I am today” Yet…Who we are today and our mindsets that drive every behaviour is really down to a combination of our parents , our teachers, our friends, family members, work colleagues. It’s time to ask if these mindsets are really working? And are they producing the results we want in life! If not, there’s always a better way. A new way of thinking. A new method. It’s not easy. It takes “doing the work”. Renewing an old mindset. Thinking differently, applying new ways. Failing. But never going back. But it produces new results. Better futures, better mindsets. For our kids, team mates, family and future generations. Thank you for doing the hard work. Love ❤️ Michael #leadership #leadershipspeaker #mindset #emotionalintelligence #coach #leadershipspeaker #tedtalks #tedx #checkyourbs

In both our personal and professional lives, we often find ourselves dwelling on mistakes we've made. We replay moments over and over, wishing we could go back and fix what went wrong. But life doesn't grant us that luxury. However, what life does offer is the chance to move forward—stronger, wiser, and more resilient. Each day presents an opportunity to make better decisions, to show up as a better version of ourselves. This is as true in the workplace as it is in life. Whether it's a project that didn't go as planned, a missed opportunity, or a difficult conversation that could have gone differently, we must embrace the power of self-forgiveness. Letting go of what we can't change frees us to focus on what we can influence—our next steps. For leaders, this is especially important. Our teams look to us not just for direction, but for examples of how to handle setbacks. Forgiving yourself for past missteps is a powerful act that allows you to model growth and resilience. It’s through this growth that we inspire others to not only own their challenges but also learn from them and continue forward. Remember, our past mistakes don't define us, but how we choose to live each day does. So, let’s strive to make today better than yesterday—for ourselves, our teams, and those around us. Value. A five letter word with so much meaning. If we are not careful, we will allow outside influences to determine our worth and value as a leader. One small act of kindness every day creates a savings account of influence. What you place a value on shows up in your spending and saving habits. In the words of John Maxwell, here are three things people need to see in their leader. 1. I value you! People need to be incredibly valued. (People need to know that they are valued.) Do you care for me? 2. I need you! These are empowering words and you get empowering works. The team talks about who is going with me. You want to be an indispensable leader, not a dispensable leader. 3. I want more for you! These are encouraging words. Be someone who coaches and mentors better. There will always be individuals who do not like you. It’s okay. Protect your peace and walk away. Surround yourself with life givers. These individuals want the best for you. They want to see you succeed. They support you as you pursue your dreams, goals, and passions. Set boundaries for the dream killers. These individuals often maneuver themselves close by “acting”. They act like they are your friend but their advice is always limiting. Their advice may sound a bit like this: “You are smart but…” “That is a great idea but…” “Are you sure that is the appropriate…” “I’m not sure…” Know the difference between life givers and dream killers. Too often we surround ourselves with dream killers disguised as life givers then wonder why we are not moving forward. #knowyourvalue #value #beintentional #bebetter #leader #leadershipmatters #lead #leadwell #leadershipdevelopment #leadershipcoach

Reaching our performance potential requires sustained effort over time. Dr. Angela Duckworth, a psychology professor at the University of Pennsylvania, calls this Grit. She defines it as “passion and perseverance for long-term goals,” and found it to be a hallmark of high achievers across various domains. Building on Duckworth’s work, Steven Kotler, a human potential researcher, identifies six types of Grit: Perseverance Grit: The relentless ability to keep going regardless of circumstances. Baseline Grit: Training to perform even when conditions are not perfect. Weakness Grit: Identifying and improving our biggest weaknesses. Emotional Grit: Stretching the gap between stimulus and response. Fear Grit: Having the courage to try despite the presence of fear. Recovery Grit: Consistently prioritizing recovery as a peak performance non-negotiable. As leaders, understanding and cultivating these types of Grit helps us and our teams achieve extraordinary performance. Embrace Grit in all its forms to drive sustained performance as you and your teams pursue success and risk failure. #AchieveMore #Leadership #Grit #Perseverance #PeakPerformance #StevenKotler #AngelaDuckworth #Resilience #TeamBuilding #Success

The Power of Self-Love and Self-Acceptance in Personal and Professional Growth In both our personal lives and professional journeys, the themes of self-love and self-acceptance are crucial. Recently, I’ve been reflecting on how the way we think about ourselves can either propel us forward or hold us back. It’s easy to overlook, but our inner guidance system is always working, even when we’re not fully aware of it. By trusting our instincts and embracing our true selves, we allow ourselves to step into our fullest potential. This journey of self-discovery doesn’t have to be difficult or take a long time. It’s about being gentle with ourselves, trusting our process, and staying aligned with our true path. When we do this, everything else begins to fall into place. Affirmation for Today: " I trust my inner guidance to lead me always to my highest and greatest good." Let's remember that self-love and self-acceptance aren’t just personal matters—they are foundational to how we show up in the world, both professionally and personally. #SelfDevelopment #Leadership #PersonalGrowth #Mindset #ProfessionalDevelopment #HolisticHealth

Hello everyone, 🤗 As someone who's been right there in the trenches, part of different teams, navigating the twists and turns of leadership's journey, I've gained a real feel for what it's all about. This poem? It's my attempt to pour out those raw, real feelings I've carried with me through it all. THE LEADER'S STRUGGLE - A PERSONAL STORY In the world of leadership, it's like walking alone, Where thanks are rare, and praise is unknown. Changes we make often go unnoticed, it's true, And memories of victories quickly fade from view. Each success, examined so closely, it seems, Then swiftly forgotten in the rush of daily schemes. Expectations climb higher, to reach the sky, While loneliness creeps in, asking "why?" We long for approval from those we hold near, Torn between loyalty and what's clear. On this leader's journey, we search for a sign, To connect our heart and our mind. The struggle is constant, with envy and deceit, A never-ending challenge, it seems, to compete. #LeadershipJourney #LonelyRoad #AppreciationMatters #SuccessStruggles #LeadershipChallenges #GratitudeGap #MemoryLane #ConstantStruggle #BackstabbingBlues #LeadershipDilemma #HeartAndMind #TeamworkTales #SimplePoetry #EverydayLeadership #LeadershipInsights

Discipline Equals Freedom: A Simple Truth We often think of discipline as limiting, but it’s the key to freedom. This principle from Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink changed my approach to life. A few months ago, I was overwhelmed by work and personal goals. I felt like I never had enough time. Then, I adopted a simple morning routine: wake up early, exercise, and plan my day. At first, it felt restrictive, but soon I realised that the discipline gave me more control. I completed tasks faster, had more time for what mattered, and felt less stressed. The Takeaway: Discipline creates structure, and structure creates freedom. Taking control of your time allows you to do more, enjoy more, and feel free. #DisciplineEqualsFreedom #ExtremeOwnership #PersonalGrowth #Leadership

3w💯 Dr Kirsten Peterson. The more is better narrative starts young - in a world that champions comparison more and more, the belief that 'grinding it out' is how you get ahead has be ingrained. I work with many young people on being kinder to themselves.
