This is a problem for most conventional treatment technologies that they cope with large buffer tanks. In addition, pharmaceutical effluents contain high COD with poor biodegradability. Moreover, pharmaceutical production effluents contain traces of contaminating substances and active pharmaceutical ingredients that can lead to multi-resistant germs in the environment if not treated properly. Cutting down water consumption in the pharmaceutical industry by up to 44% 💧♻ Reducing and reusing water consumption is becoming an increasingly important part of pharmaceutical manufacturers’ strategic sustainability plans. The pharmaceutical industry is water-intensive and production processes are designed to be resilient and ensure patient safety and thus require extensive cleaning processes. Adding to that, restrictions on water consumption due to (among other things) legislation and drought, are becoming even tighter, which is prompting companies to rethink their water management 💡🌊 NIRAS has been working with a large-scale pharmaceutical company to mitigate water issues for a major international pharmaceutical manufacturer. In this effort, significant reductions have been made in several steps of the production process, one of them being the Clean In Place (CIP) water.
