Great overview of the different article types. Each needs to be read differently. Seminal work is also known as original research.
Understanding your research topic is just half the challenge. The other half is understanding the entire research landscape, including all the different TYPES of scientific literature. Here are the most common types of scientific papers, and when they matter in your literature review: 1. Seminal work ✔ Important papers in your field 2. Review ✔ Get a comprehensive overview of your topic 3. Empirical ✔ Understand how experiments in your field look 4. Methodology ✔ Learn new methods, and how researchers test them 5. Theoretical ✔ Read about important theories and contributions 6. Case study ✔ Easily learn from real-life applications, examples and studies 7. Conference paper ✔ Find out the latest advances The beauty is, you can figure out the type BEFORE you read a paper. In fact, the type of paper helps you understand if it's what you should be reading right now. Search for articles in Litmaps to quickly see all the key information for a paper, helping you to pinpoint its type and relevance: - Title - Authors - Journal - Abstract See the images below for more details ⬇ ___________________ We're on a mission to help accelerate impactful science. Dear #researchers I always struggled with understanding what are abstracts and their types? All I knew, existed were Structured abstracts and Unstructured abstracts... So, I thought of going deeper.. And I understood that abstracts are the sneak peek of a research paper. They're like those movie trailers that give you a quick rundown of what to expect without spoiling the whole plot. But, why are abstracts important? I realized that while scrolling through tons of articles trying to find the perfect study for your project. Abstracts save the day by giving you a snapshot of the paper's purpose, methods, results, and conclusions. It's like a cheat code for navigating the sea of academic literature! But wait, there's more! I acknowledged that there are more types of abstracts... Abstracts aren't one-size-fits-all. Nope, they come in different flavors: Descriptive Abstracts: These are like the bare-bones summaries. They give you the basics without any frills or fancy interpretations. Informative Abstracts: These bad boys go beyond the basics and spill the tea on key results and conclusions. They're like your friend who always has the inside scoop. Structured Abstracts: Picture this: clear headings guiding you through the abstract jungle. That's what structured abstracts do! They break down the info into neat little sections so you can find what you need in a jiffy. Critical Abstracts: Think of these as the Yelp reviews of research papers. They not only summarize the study but also dish out some juicy critiques on methodology and validity. Highlight Abstracts: Highlight abstracts shine a spotlight on the juiciest findings, perfect for those who want the "Too Long; Didn't Read" version. Graphical Abstracts: Graphical abstracts jazz things up with visuals like charts and diagrams, making them a feast for the eyes. Abstracts might seem intimidating at first, but once you get the hang of them, they're your ticket to navigating the wild world of research literature. Happy reading! PS: What type of abstracts did you know and have read previously? Share in the comments below. Warm Regards Dr. Priya Singh 🩺 Founder, Research Made Clear Keep Following! #researcher #abstracts #academiclife #keepitsimple #researchstudy #phd #phdstudents #postgraduates

Understand that finding novel ideas for research isn’t: ❌ Waiting for a bolt of genius to strike. ❌ Reading surface-level summaries of existing literature. ❌ Ignoring the limitations of past research. ❌ Passing by unanswered questions in previous studies. ❌ Avoiding alternative pathways or solutions. But, it is: ✅ A learnable skill. ✅ Becoming a detective in existing literature. ✅ Turning limitations of past studies into unexplored avenues. ✅ Picking up where past authors left off to push boundaries. ✅ Using daily curiosity and observations for inspiration. Your approach to research helps to answer these questions: 1. What were the limitations of this study? 2. What questions did the authors leave unanswered? 3. What alternative pathways or solutions are available? Tip: Trust your curiosity, hone your questioning skills, and let the excitement of discovery guide you. Remember, the right questions shape your research approach! #research #phd #knowledge #science #innovation What’s your approach to uncovering novel research ideas?
