Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) remains a significant cause of severe respiratory illness in infants and young children, making preventive measures a critical component of reducing its health and economic burden. In our recent research paper, we focused on two interventions for RSV in Kenya—a maternal vaccine and a long-acting monoclonal antibody (mAb). These interventions, delivered through existing health platforms, offer promising avenues for protecting vulnerable populations. Our analysis aimed to understand the financial and economic costs of integrating these tools into Kenya’s health system, offering insights that are vital for policymakers and global health stakeholders. These cost projections go beyond simple budgeting—they underscore the importance of health system strengthening as an integral part of rolling out new vaccines. For low- and middle-income countries like Kenya, where health budgets are limited, understanding these costs is critical for making informed, sustainable choices. Our analysis estimates the financial cost of delivering the maternal vaccine at $1.50 per dose, rising to $6.60 when accounting for economic costs. These estimates highlight the primary contributors of expanding RSV interventions, with significant cost drivers including health worker training, service delivery, and programme planning. These findings present an opportunity to save young lives through informed policymaking and sustainable health interventions. In addition to investing in effective programme coordination and health worker training, building resilient health systems that can integrate new vaccines and therapies without overwhelming existing structures is critical to ensuring lifesaving RSV interventions reach those who need them most. 🎉 Our Delphi study assessing the relevance of public health and healthcare resources for pandemic preparedness and response has been published in BMJ Open 👉 https://lnkd.in/enKmeEzY ❔ During the PANDEM-2 project one of our main objectives was to develop a resource planning system that used resource modelling to explore the demand profile for key resources during pandemic scenarios. 📋 After performing a systematic review of resources, we (Mart Stein, PhD Joeri Buis Alma Tostmann Caroline Green Jim Duggan Maire Connolly Chantal Rovers Aura Timen) performed two international Delphi consensus procedures (once with public health experts and once with clinicians) to assess the relevance of resource types and associated parameters for pandemic preparedness and resource models supporting pandemic preparedness 📌 Our findings highlight a set of highly relevant resources that should be considered for pandemic preparedness, and also highlight the importance of including both the clinical and public health perspective in any pandemic preparedness activity. 🆓 "Best practice in COPD care: a health equity approach" 🆓 This DTB article written by Anna Moore, Hannah Hylton, Alex Long, Catherine Taylor, Patricia Pennington and Irem Patel is available free from our website. "There is a strong evidence base for the best care in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) as outlined by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence in its five fundamentals of COPD care: offer treatment and support to stop smoking; offer pneumococcal and influenza vaccinations; offer pulmonary rehabilitation if indicated; codevelop a personalised self-management plan; and optimise treatment for comorbidities. However, only a minority of those living with COPD receive or engage with all five interventions, with clear implications for outcomes. Further, barriers which prevent people who live with COPD accessing necessary care are unequally experienced. In order to overcome many of these barriers, clinicians caring for people with COPD must prioritise personalised treatment and continuity of care." https://lnkd.in/ehg_TZUK

This letter sets out guidance for the 2024 to 2025 season and includes the next steps for regions and providers to take, including which flu vaccines to order. The letter confirms that there are no changes to the eligible cohorts for the coming year, although providers should read the section on the timing of the programme carefully. #fluseason #flu #generalpractice #generalpractices #gpfederation #primarycare #primarycarenetworks #pcns https://lnkd.in/eiyfT72N

Long COVID Scotland - Dr. Sally Witcher and Jane Ormerod Sally Witcher, PhD and Jane Ormerod from long COVID Scotland discuss the status of the COVID-19 pandemic and long COVID in the United Kingdom and Scotland. The presenters stressed the lack of available healthcare for those suffering from long COVID and also the lack of gathering data and transparency regarding the magnitude of the problem. Governmental strategies are over reliant on vaccinations and even if vaccines produced ironclad durable immunity, they are not widely available to the general public. Few if any are masking, including medical personnel in major healthcare centers. Similar to many countries, there is rampant misinformation which is inhibiting the public health response. Currently, the United Kingdom's workforce is being adversely affected to a large degree by chronic illnesses, but there remains little discussion or recognition of the impacts of long COVID. Greeting Parents and loved ones. Please listen to this video about Measles 😷. It’s Happening and Contagious… Florida as an example seems to have an outbreak. Get your children vaccinated please 🙏🏽. It might be hard to go to your place of work, food shopping, etc if your child has measles. Ask the doctor what protocols you and others need to abide by. Stay SAFE!! ⛑️😷 Low-risk adults born after 1957 without proof of immunity should have one dose of MMR vaccine. Most adults in the U.S. are at low risk for measles. In general, providers do not need to actively screen low-risk adult patients for measles in non-outbreak areas of the U.S.

‼️ New publication alert ‼️ "A problem for Africa is a problem for the world...” In our new commentary in BMJ Global Health, we highlight three intersecting challenges in the ongoing mpox outbreaks: 🦠 Shifting Epidemiology: A new strain (clade 1b) with different transmission dynamics and more severe morbidity/mortality is now circulating, threatening vulnerable groups including children. 🏥 Systemic Challenges: Risk awareness remains low, affected communities are stigmatised and marginalised, there's widespread socioeconomic disparity, public distrust, and acute violence and displacement exacerbate vulnerabilities. 🌍 Global Neglect: Inequitable access to diagnostics, treatments, vaccines, and research funding, undermining trust in the global architecture and frameworks for managing health emergencies collectively, in solidarity. Our call to action: 1️⃣ Deploy mobile, well-equipped and adequately compensated frontline health workers. 2️⃣ Ensure systems for socio-economic support for most affected groups. 3️⃣ Funds should be disbursed with equity, transparency and accountability, such that people also perceive it to be so. 4️⃣ Resource allocation toward efficient and resilient primary healthcare structures, as well as national public health institutions that engage with upstream political, social, economic, and environmental forces. 5️⃣ Regionalise R&D to contribute toward greater regional self-sufficiency and resilience. It is with great gratitude and privilege that I get to work alongside Nelson Aghogho Evaborhene and the inspired co-authors on this piece. 🔗 Read our commentary here:
