As an analyst in the CSR space, I am noticing an emerging split in the value of CSR programs. One branch serves workforce engagement issues, such as professional development, upskilling, employee engagement, productivity, retention, and attraction - which adds tremendous business value, and the other branch serves the community. The former operates via volunteering and ERGs and the latter via grant making and donation/matching campaigns. There are two recent trends that inform my view. The release of the report from the Oxford Wellbeing Research Centre touting volunteering as the only effective well-being program, as well as Benevity's Impact Labs reports showing that Volunteering Acts of Kindness, which can include lunch and learns and helping neighbors, is nearly a third of all volunteering undertaken these days, and growing quickly. Benevity's VAOK essentially untethers volunteering from nonprofits, which may continue to improve an employee's well being, thereby serving the workforce engagement initiatives of a company, but may not be helping those most in need via nonprofits. In addition, reporting on the affect of these initiatives (once thought to be the linchpin of measuring impact) will be near impossible. This is a distinct pivot away from social impact to employee well-being from one of the major players in the game. #csr #corporatphilanthropy #volunteering #employeeengagement
