Sad news, that often goes unsaid. Unfortunately its true our NZ health system relies on overworking as does much of the Western model - especially in public service. Im not entirely sure of the alternative but… This week I have booked an appointment with a pain specialist at a private institution including immediate investigations and interventions if required. The booking was done online and I secured an appointment within 48 hrs with several followups. The patient before me needs said interventions so our appointment is bumped by an hour so they can be dealt with. No dramas, no negativity - just understanding and support and great service. This will cost me less than $NZ200 if said investigations and interventions are required. Maybe, just maybe… our thirst to maintain the queue and our penchant for controlling process actually inhibits our outcomes - and maybe its collectively us that needs to change our approach - Im down, are you? Ps paying someone more has its limits… usually beyond safe limits too. The system has to support the outcomes we need. Will update later, if I dont go missing haha.

According to the Fortune op-ed, the US healthcare system is in crisis, facing soaring demand due to aging populations and rising chronic diseases, coupled with severe workforce shortages that are impacting patient care quality and staff well-being. Access to healthcare, including primary, preventive, specialized, and post-hospital care, is becoming increasingly elusive, especially in underserved communities. The Future Health Index 2024 report highlights that 92% of healthcare leaders cite workforce shortages as profoundly impacting staff, and 81% say it negatively impacts patient care. When you think of a healthcare desert, it's easy to just imagine the most remote rural regions and perhaps some tumbleweed gliding across an unpaved road. The reality is, the United States is full of these medical deserts, coast to coast. Roughly 30 million people in the continental US live in what can be considered a healthcare desert, where access to care is sparse, due to lack of healthcare facilities, transportation limitations, inadequate technical infrastructure like spotty internet service, and systemic socioeconomic and demographic inequities.
