I observed in Norway several time such black white welds on touristic safety infrastructure (e.g. handrails). I am quite amazed about that, and it seems there is no increase in corrosion at the joint. Consider that in Norway it is raining (too) often, these constructions are far way from salt-spray and air polution is in the fjordland no problem. In other words; there is no electrolyte. What do you think about this safety construction? Imagine this at a mediterranean seaside.

🌏 📝 In all of our projects, during the impact assessment process, we place strong emphasis on proposing project-specific impact avoidance and mitigation measures based on best practices in the field that have proven their effectiveness in other situations. This allows for the implementation of projects with the lowest possible environmental impact, as well as the minimization of costs for the beneficiaries. 🐾 However, proposals do not always end up being properly implemented during the construction period. One such example is the implementation of a reinforced fence, which should prevent bears from entering the motorway. The model is based on experience in Greece, where collisions between traffic participants and bears were regularly reported on the Egnatia motorway before the implementation of this type of fence. Unfortunately, after construction, the result shows only a superficial resemblance to the original model but lacks essential elements. 🐦 Building a Brighter Future for Kittiwakes! 🐦 We're thrilled to share the remarkable work Four Tees Engineers (FTE) contributed to the creation of artificial nesting structures (ANS) for vulnerable kittiwakes! In collaboration with Red7Marine and Ørsted, FTE transformed the original design to optimise the build process and ensure successful installation off the East Suffolk coast. Three of these innovative structures were strategically placed near Minsmere Nature Reserve and South Beach, Lowestoft, approximately 1 km offshore. By drawing on their experience in challenging environments like Antarctica, FTE implemented a modular kit approach that minimised on-site assembly and streamlined transportation. Their detailed improvements to design, materials, and coatings enhanced the resilience of the structures and reduced long-term maintenance costs. This groundbreaking project, the first of its kind in the industry, demonstrates the power of collaborative engineering to protect precious species and support a healthier marine ecosystem. Swedish marine civils firm SF Marina has installed arc-shaped floating breakwaters to protect the Waiheke Island Marina in New Zealand. Situated in the Hauraki Gulf, Waiheke Island Marina is the newest yachting destination in New Zealand, and has 180 docks that need protection from a large fetch and wake from passing ferries. The environment at the marina is also considered to be ecologically sensitive, being shallow and home to a colony of Little Penguins. “The concern was that a traditional rock-pile breakwater would impact currents and the area’s delicate flora and fauna,” said SF Marina, which is based in Gothenburg. “Plus, the marina required a new office and parking lot, but the adjacent land was already developed, That’s why SF Marina’s floating concrete pontoons were the ideal solution.” The two arc-shaped breakwaters actually mirror the island’s scalloped coastline, comprising 23 individual 20m x 6m floating concrete pontoons. The pontoons are connected with the company’s coupling system, which absorbs and distributes stress loads, with internal steel piles anchoring the breakwater to the seabed. An office and 2,100m2 car park have been built on top of the floating pontoons, which SF Marina claims are virtually unsinkable, with rainwater channeled from the platforms and filtered before going into the sea. After all, SF Marina says, building on top of floating platforms is not new – “in Sweden, a two-storey, 33-room hotel uses similar pontoons for its foundation,” it says. The world's first floating underwater tunnel will be built in northern Norway, connecting the cities of Kristiansand and Trondheim. This project will improve connectivity between different areas of the country. The project involves two concrete tubes connected to each other, which, thanks to a series of floating structures, will remain suspended in the water. In addition, they will be anchored in some places to the seabed with cables. Inside each of these tunnels there will be a two-lane highway, one for each direction of travel. There will also be dedicated lanes for bicycles. These tunnels will not interrupt the navigation of boats, as they will be immersed at a depth of about 30 meters. The total length will be about 1.2 kilometers. Thanks to projects of this type, Norway will be able to reduce its dependence on its ferry system, currently used to cross the fjords, significantly reducing travel times. The project is estimated to cost around $25 billion, and the Norwegian Road Administration expects the tunnel to be completed by 2035.
