This month I had the privilege of presenting our paper at the Higher Education Teaching and Learning conference (#HELT) held in #SouthAfrica. https://lnkd.in/d63VbiPi My first time in this beautiful and wonderful country! The paper (publishing soon) 'The Sustainable University: Creating societal impact, the next step!' makes the case for Higher Education institutions (HEI) to play a greater role in meeting the challenges of Sustainability. It outlines specific strategies and initiatives that develop a culture of #Sustainability . This culture is evident once sustainability is embedded within the HEI's DNA and clearly visible in all its functions. We propose a transdisciplinary approach to find innovative sustainable solutions that uses entrepreneurship as the vehicle to transfer these solutions to market, enabling universities to create real societal impact. This paper has been authored by a transdisciplinary team working on a major sustainability research project funded by @HigherCollegesofTechnology The team are @Dr. Wasif Minhas @Zakwan Skaf @Dr. Hassan Abdulmouti @Dr. Mohammed S. #UAE #closedloopurbanagriculture #energysecurity #cleanair #climatechange #SDGs #aquaponics #Sustainabilityresearch.

ATTUNE Project is bringing a real CHANGE to Universities One of the participants of ATTUNE Project at Stiftung Universität Hildesheim explained her motivation for taking part in the workshops: “I am not only interested in research, but also in the concrete implementation of the sustainability goals on a structural level. In order to initiate sustainable transformations in the university context, all university members must be involved in these processes: students, staff and university management.” It’s what we all want, SEE THE CHANGE and @attuneproject gives a chance to BE A CHANGE The aim of all workshops at Universities involved in ATTUNE was for each team to decide on a measure or project for more climate protection at the university, which they now implement Want to see what’s going on further way? "Times Higher Education (THE) has created a novel set of global rankings of universities, the impact rankings,” Fernando Reimers, of Harvard University writes in his latest article for Daedalus, Educating Students for Climate Action: Distraction or Higher Education Capital? “[They] have made innovations in higher education more visible than they would have been otherwise. Without them, the advances would have been known only to those at their respective institutions… "For example,” he says, “Amrita University, a small private university established in 1994 in Coimbatore, India… was recognized in the last round of the impact rankings as the most impactful university in India and the 41st most impactful university in the world, to a great extent because many of its programs focus on improving human conditions in rural communities and among the poor, and require that students spend part of their time living in poor communities so that part of their studies can contribute to those efforts. "Other efforts to make innovations in higher education in climate action more visible include various awards, such as those managed by the Times Higher Education to recognize exemplary practices, including in environmental leadership, in the United Kingdom, Asia, and the Arab World." 🌍 Exciting insights shared from the recent Baltic University Programme (BUP) International Symposium! 🎓 Alicja Antochów took part in the Baltic University Programme (BUP) International Symposium and presented a poster related to the Europe-LAND project, its main objectives and the importance of our research for adaptation to climate change. Here are some details about the conference: The symposium titled „The Role of Universities and Research for Sustainable Regional Development” took place from 21st to 23rd April 2024 at the Bialystok University of Technology in Poland. The event was centered around the challenges currently faced by the Baltic Sea Region and the role of universities as models to address them. The conference was divided into three plenary sessions called: Theories of Sustainable Development,Trends and Directions in Sustainable Development on a National Level and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Best Practices. The first two of them addressed the participant’s research, and the third one – best practices in terms of policies for a greener campus. The formats for the conference presentation included an oral paper or a poster. Both of them had to be associated with at least one of the BUP’s research areas, including Climate Change, Energy Systems, Sustainable Societies, Sustainable Water Resources, Urban Rural Development, Sustainable Mobility,Circular Economy, Sustainable Tourism, Education for Sustainable Development or Sustainable Food Systems. Over 100 universities from 10 countries are members of the Baltic University Programme. Representatives from six of them (Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Sweden and Ukraine) and 14 BUP participating universities attended the conference. The list of speakers also included specialists from Nigeria and Turkey. More than 100 people were the recipients of the lecture and poster sessions. Congratulations to the organisers for organising such a valuable event! Here's to continued collaboration for a sustainable future. 🌿 #SustainableDevelopment #BalticUniversityProgramme #ClimateAction #ResearchImpact
