🌱As part of a study on Harithakarma Sena (HKS), I had the opportunity to visit the Green Worms unit, where I observed an impressive Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model in action. This visit inspired me to explore and compare the PPP model with the Government-Led model, leading to a collaboration with Sreerag Kuruvat to write a paper titled "Comparative Analysis of Government-Led and Public-Private Partnership Models for Waste Management: A Case Study of Chemmanad Grama Panchayat, Kerala." I am thrilled to share that this paper was featured in the Book of Abstracts of SUSCON XI, the 11th Annual International Conference on Sustainability, organized by Indian Institute of Management Shillong, Umsawli (ISBN: 978-93-341-4458-1), pages 48-51. The findings indicate that the PPP model is more effective in terms of waste collection volume, public participation, and user fee collection. The flexibility and efficiency of the PPP model lead to higher levels of service provision and financial performance. However, the HKS model is more effective in terms of social welfare perspective, by providing better employment conditions, demonstrating a stable approach to managing waste management staff. #Sustainability #WasteManagement #PPPModel #SocialWelfare #Research #Collaboration #HarithakarmaSena #SUSCONXI #IIMShillong

it is my pleasure to chair an important session that discussed on what next after ODF i.e. beyond toilets and latrines. The innovative attempts the countries are making towards the journey of safely managed sanitation sevices with equity and inclusiveness adopting CWIS approach amidst the current challenges that we all are facing in the region in this journey of safe sanitation is commendable. The state of the Kariamu road demands urgent attention. This image shared by a friend of Aberdare Yetu paints a clear picture of the challenges our community faces daily. Local farmers and small businesses struggle due to impassable roads, hindering trade and prosperity. Prioritizing the upgrade of the 33.6km Ndaragwa - Kariamu - Ndunyu Njeru route is crucial for sustainable trade. It will empower farmers to reach markets and ensure timely supply for local shops. We urge local legislators and the government to prioritize sustainable infrastructure development for a thriving Aberdare community! #CancelNEMALicence #SupportAberdareRoadUpgrade #InfrastructureMatters #CommunityTrade #AberdareYetu

IWMI and Professional Assistance For Development Action (PRADAN) organized a State Level Stakeholder Consultation in Madhya Pradesh yesterday, focusing on the intersection of Policy Governance and Participatory Groundwater Management (PGWM). The event incorporated insights from the Atal Bhujal Yojana and MGNREGS policies, both of which prioritize resource convergence and a community-driven approach to managing natural resources, with a particular focus on groundwater. Our study under the CGIAR #NPSInitiative takes a qualitative approach to understanding the governance and implementation of these schemes. Two critical learnings emerged: 📈 There is a need to develop soft skills in leadership and community mobilization to scale PGWM. 📊 The importance of integrating scientific tools to facilitate bottom-up decision-making. The workshop fostered discussions on strengthening bottom-up approaches in policy governance and natural resource management across India. "This is my first session on Holistic Solid Waste Management since becoming an entrepreneur. Achieving better resource recovery has been a challenging task for every Urban Local Body (ULB), but with the right support from relevant stakeholders and execution, any ULB can achieve zero waste. We are open to sharing our experiences through live case studies."
Thanks to Davangere DUDC and TIDE for organising a training on 27th June 2024 for the ULB officials to tackle Solid Waste Management challenges in their respective municipalities. We got an opportunity to share experiences on how to get the households to segregate their waste and presented innovations & case studies on successful implementation of source segregation at various locations. The session also featured insightful contributions from Mr. Chithambarachary from ZIGMA on clearing legacy waste, including planning, implementation and monitoring of legacy waste remediation. From Namathi, we extend best wishes to the six Davanagere ULBs—Honnali, Nyamathi, Channagiri, Harihara, Malebennur, and Jagalur—as they work towards improving source segregation and initiating legacy waste remediation. We appreciate the efforts put by TIDE who have come forward to provide technical support for small towns in the water and sanitation sector with support from BORDA under the Integrated Water Management project. #WED24 | How can we use Education and Communication (IEC) for Environmental Change? Our next case study sheds light on the importance of effective communication for change! Read on to find out how Education and Communication (IEC) raised source segregation levels from 10% to about 70%. Under the Indo-German DeveloPPP project Alag Karo (II), several IEC tools were used to implement source segregation of municipal solid waste. This change was driven by hyperlocal messages reinforced through a radio campaign and at community events with games, competitions and nukkad nataks (street plays) performed with gusto both by the project team at Saahas and local children. Housemaids were trained in both Hindi and Bengali, the primary language for many of them. Any questions, challenges faced by the housekeeping staff were duly addressed by the project team at Saahas in collaboration with the citizens, again highlighting the need for effective communication. Impact created: 👉 As a result of source segregation, waste workers were able to increase their incomes and the frequencies of injuries they had reduced. 👉 Segregated wet waste resulted in the production of high-quality compost that is distributed to the residents. Read more about this in the case study below. Stay tuned for our upcoming impact report to know more! #GIZ #WasteSegregation #WasteManagement Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) Coca-Cola India Tetra Pak Saahas Municipal Corporation of Gurugram

Critical analysis Jal Jeevan Mission program aimed for providing potable water in adequate quantity (>55 LPCD) of prescribed water in sustainable manner over full design period at affordable charges with assured service delivery through Functional House Hold Connections (FHTC) to every rural community of country. Completion targeted by march 24. Program sprit was excellent. On paper almost 80% House Hold coverage claimed. Still 20% yet to be covered. Ground reality is else. Functionality & assured water service delivery missing. Program aimed as Jan Andolan but community involvement missing. Planning strategy was demand driven but again it was supply driven. Water supply schemes not planned with the sprit of JJM guidelines by state nodal agencies. Source sustainability not considered. Impacting service delivery. Identification of sustainable sources missing as per JJM guidelines Systems inappropriately designed resulting in high cost & unaffordable by operation & maintenance community not capable to manage. Under quality material used & also bad workmanship impacting O&M sustainability. Water Quality not assured. Skilled Human Resources not created at village level to ensure sustainable O& M. Sources sustainability over looked. Challenge with Regional WSS is sustainability of O&M as such requires huge operation cost. Willingness to pay missing among community. Lack of covegence & coordination Can be considered as Strategic planning failure due to lack of capacity building. KRC not capable to deliver the desired results. Atal Bhujal , Jal Shakti Abhiyan & amrit sarovar programs planned to ensure source sustainability but due to lack of scientific planning approach , these programs not yielded desired results. In reality how much House Hold Connection r functional, a million dollars question. #worldbankwater #unwater #unicefindia #rwsn #wateraidindia #usaid #ircwash #globalwatercentre #bricksbank #asiandevepementbank #giz #jaljeevanmission #nitiayog #pmoindia #unops #denmarkinindia #atalbhujal #jalshaktiabhiyan
