No wonder we have a cost of living crisis. So, my GE dishwasher is not working properly - its due to a part in the sprayer preventing the top rack from washing. It's an extendable plastic cover - shouldn't cost no more than $10-20 and an easy fix. I go into a local parts and appliance store (I refuse to use Amazon unless I have no other options) - the employee there was super helpful but sadly informed me that to get the part I wanted, I'd have to buy an entire assembly just to get the part. $90 overall with shipping. Now, I have an older dishwasher, so getting a replacement part on hand makes sense, but this is a real conversation about how we now design modern this to break easily and making it impractical to fix something, forcing us to buy a brand new appliance (or phone or car or insert here). Whatever happened to using less? My oven is 40 years old. Original to my condo. Still works great. I'm running it into the ground. Same with my car. New appliances these days tend to break down easily, and because of chips, etc., they force you to "buy another a new appliance" - gotta keep GDP figures strong #latestagecapitalism In any case, big shout out to Ron's Appliance Repair in #lethbridge for exceptional customer service.

In an effort to remain competitive, companies focus on taking cost out of the product, when most often than not the most expensive thing is everything related to the logistics and delivery. * Packaging * Warehousing * Transportation * Even the cost of handling and damages * All the management costs and resources involved in designing, planning and operating these things above. While some people argue these are value or non value added things, these costs are considered part of doing business and we as consumers end up paying more for them than for a quality product.
Our washing machine broke (under warranty) and a new one was delivered. Is it wrong I kind of wanted the replacement to fall off the liftgate? Interesting to chat with the two guys delivering it. He said they typically get 5 damaged appliances per week. Think fridges, washing machines, microwaves, ranges, etc. Appliance manufacturers are getting forced to squeeze cost out of their product (maybe why this one died after 15 months?). Are they looking at their packaging? #boldtsmithpackagingconsultants #getsmartwithyourpackaging #packagingoptimization #packaging #appliances

7moThis drives me crazy. Appliances these days are built to be disposable.
