Every day, dirt is in our professional conversation….and when it’s not, there’s something missing in vineyard and grape quality. It is still very common to have blind spots in our day to day farming practices, and as a winemaker, I like to start here; With soils….with the “dirt” (loosely)! Attached is basic review for most wine growers. For many of us, reviewing the basics is never “TMI” when; 1) Working to refine productivity and consistency in each vineyard block; 2) Transitioning from larger scale commercial farming to building higher quality focus for wine brand integrity. Here’s the 3 Questions every wine-grower should be asking IN AN OVERSUPPLY MARKET: A. Are you satisfied with the quality of your fruit but you are having a difficult time finding a buyer? B. Are you assertive in developing relationships and engaging with winemakers to understand what specifically they are looking for in quality specifics? C. Do you have a specific plan on how to transition your grapes from low-cost buyer farming to the highest quality potential or a plan to bridge between an oversupply market to a balanced market? Obviously this is a deeper topic than simply ‘engaging in a LinkedIn post’, but quality combined with relationship is now going to win the day….or at least raise the probability for success. Thank you Carl Rosen for a timeless input to help us winegrowers organize our thoughts on “dirt”. #winemakersforum #techtalk4wine #soilscience #vinotinto #grapebroker #oldvines Bill Tolar ETH SOIL - BIO-POWER FOR HEALTHY SOILS University of California, Davis Organic Consumers Association of Australia

South Australian Government Launches Cost-Saving Vine Resting Trial for Grape Growers 🍇 South Australian wine grape growers are being offered significant cost-saving opportunities through a newly announced vine resting trial. Initiated by the Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development, Clare Scriven, the program could save growers up to $2,000 per hectare in input, water, and management costs. This trial comes at a crucial time as the state’s wine industry continues to face challenges from an oversupply of red wine grapes, even after the recent lifting of tariffs on Australian wines in China. 🌱 The trial leverages research from the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) and Wine Australia, focusing on the use of Ethephon, a plant growth regulator that reduces crop yield to eliminate the need for harvest. This method allows growers to maintain essential vine health while cutting back on intensive fertigation, water application, and disease management. A $40 rebate per hectare, covering up to 1,000 hectares per ABN, provides further financial relief to participating growers. 💼 This initiative is part of a broader strategy to support the wine sector amid ongoing difficulties. In addition to the vine resting trial, other measures include a $1.85 million effort to re-engage with the Chinese market, a $3.5 million viability support package from the Federal Labor Government, and up to $1,500 in direct aid through the Rural Business Support Relief fund. #WineIndustry #SouthAustralia #Agriculture #Sustainability #CostSaving #VineyardManagement

𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘆: 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗮 𝗦𝗻𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀 Now that's something different! Have you ever tried cassava root? 🌱 Cassava is a plant species of the genus Manihot (manioc). Other names for this crop and its agricultural product (the harvested root tubers) are mandi'o (Paraguay), mandioca (Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay), cassava or, in Spanish-speaking Latin America, yuca. The plant is widely cultivated because of its starchy root tubers. The processed starch is called tapioca. It originally comes from South America and was already used as a food by the indigenous people. For one of our customers, we made wonderful snacks in various shapes from the cooked tuber. The deep-fried snacks are similar to the potato products we are familiar with in Germany. However, the consistency and taste are very different. From my own experience, I can say: incredibly tasty! And they look great too, don't they? Do you also want to make products like these? Then I can highly recommend our forming system FS 510: - Precise weights 💯 - Uniform products ⭕ - Flexible shapes 🔴 🔶 🔲 - High output 🏃♂️ For more information get in contact with Albert Handtmann Maschinenfabrik GmbH & Co.
