Daily Dollop of Wallop #56 So, I am currently on the big long thing that slides along rails, heading to the London Wine Fair. Now, this is a big event on the calendar for the UK wine trade as well as, the rest of the world. Not nearly as big, illustrious, inventive or inviting as it was when I first came way back in 2008 (anyone remember the Excel days?), but it is still a collection of dates in the calendar that attracts the world’s most influential people in our trade. The whole idea of a trade show is for a company or individual to showcase its assets to an audience specifically attending in search of the following: Something new and exciting Something older but an opportunity for us to become reacquainted with Someone to engage with where we feel an opportunity to change the world may arise The opportunity to learn For me, this is what a trade show is all about. It doesn’t matter what the products or services are, these things are exactly why we attend trade shows of all types. This year, there is a really good set of masterclasses, seminars, workshops and state of the nation style summits happening across the 3 days. I would say, the best roster of topics and people I have seen in many, many years. The one thing lacking here though is the importance of training education or learning and development however, but I will leave that for another post I think! If anyone is attending today and wants to meet up for a coffee, chat about wine and make a connection or for any other reason where an opportunity may arise. Please do get in touch. In a room full of likeminded people with ideas on how to change the shape of the wine world, it seems absolutely bananas to me why we wouldn’t meet up with people we don’t know for the sheer sake of it. Knowing that something magical could become of it. I’m here all day. Are you?

Different > Better I saw this truth in action last week. I had the privilege of being a speaker at the inaugural Laundry CEO Forum. It was hands down the best industry event I've ever attended. → speakers who addressed the audience's needs → armchairs and couches for the main sessions → food that was out of this world → attendees sharing their own resources and insights → people hungry to learn how to do their business better And that doesn't even touch on test-driving a Ferrari! Seriously. Marketing conferences are lame compared to this. The reason it was such a smashing success: It was different. That's what I heard from every attendee I talked to. Nothing like this event exists in their industry. And that's where the value lies. You see, being better means doing the same thing with... ...more time ...more money ...more people But being different? That means nothing in the market can touch you. Kudos to Waleed Cope 🏴☠️ and Jessica Johnson-Cope for such a different and amazing event. I'm already looking forward to next year... ...and that Ferrari Waleed promised me 😉 Want to stand out in your industry? Take a page out of Waleed and Jessica's book. Be different. Last Monday, several folks from MH had the incredible opportunity to attend The Welcome Conference 2024. Each of us left transformed! To note, for a hospitality centric conference, both the audience & speakers were from a wide range of trades and geographic origins (across the US and internationally!). The red threads of Welcome 2024? The importance of teams, interpersonal relationships, and how to maintain them. Every speaker touched on this theme despite their varying topics. My BIGGEST lightbulb moment was from Jade Simmons. The top 2 takeaways: 1. Your Purpose is NOT the thing you do. It’s the thing that happens in others when you do what you do. 2. Purpose causes atmospheric shifts Looking forward to Welcome 2025!
