I had such a good night last night! I went to the pub, ordered three pints, drank one and then poured the other two on the floor… …said no one ever. Yet sadly when it comes to petrol vehicles, we’re doing just this. No, not drinking beer whilst driving but wasting a significant amount of fuel and energy. Petrol engines on the road today have an efficiency of around 30%, meaning that about 70% of the total power is lost as heat rather than the fuel being converted into useful motive power. 1 pint into the wheels, 2 pints out the window. Electric motors have an efficiency of around 85% meaning that for every three pints we order at the bar we’re spilling less than half a pint - still not perfect but much better than the alternative. Sure, there are some current applications where spilling more beer is convenient (towing heavy loads / motorhomes / long distance driving with a bladder of steel) but EV power/range is increasing and costs are dropping, especially in the Ute space.
