🚗 Using electric vehicles (#EVs) could soon save Europe’s energy companies and motorists €22.2 billion in savings per year! A new study from Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI and Fraunhofer-Institut für Solare Energiesysteme ISE for T&E, shows that EVs equipped with bidirectional charging can act as ‘batteries on wheels’ that draw down #electricity⚡ at times of oversupply, and give back when demand is higher. Bi-Directional Wireless Vehicle Charging Infrastructure would help make this much more practical and feasible if people didn't need to be plugging cables in and out all the time and parked unused vehicle fleets had this second or 3rd use case when not carrying passengers or cargo by becoming a giant battery reserve for renewable energy storage or giving back to the grid for grid stability, in the rush to invest in charging infrastructure lets make sure it is future-proof!

NEW: Using electric vehicles to store energy and feed back into the grid could soon save Europe’s energy companies and motorists billions of euros a year. New research by Fraunhofer ISI and ISE for T&E shows that EVs equipped with bidirectional charging can act as ‘batteries on wheels’ that draw down electricity at times of oversupply and give back when demand is higher. This so-called vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology can save the EU’s energy systems €22 annually by 2040. This would be an 8% reduction on the cost of building and running the EU energy system. Europe can reap the benefits of V2G technology almost for free as the additional costs of bidirectional onboard chargers and wall-boxes would be offset by reduced electricity bills within a few months. But this potential may not be realised without common EU standards to ensure interoperability between all EVs and chargers. Today I joined a fascinating webinar by Transport & Environment (T&E) where they presented a new study that explores the untapped potential of electric vehicles (EVs) to support Europe’s power grid amid a projected 50% rise in electricity demand by 2040. The takeaway? EVs have huge potential as “batteries on wheels,” but most grids and EVs aren’t yet ready for bidirectional charging—a major missed opportunity. Driving the Future: Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) Technology 🔋🚗 As the global transition to sustainable energy accelerates, Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology is emerging as a game-changer 🌍. V2G enables electric vehicles (EVs) to both draw energy from and supply it back to the grid, turning them into mobile energy storage units for grid stability and efficiency.   Why #V2G Matters: 1️⃣ Grid Stability: V2G stores surplus renewable energy, helping stabilize the grid during peak times. 2️⃣ Financial Benefits: EV owners can earn by selling energy back to the grid. 3️⃣ Sustainability: V2G reduces fossil fuel dependence and lowers emissions.   🚀 The V2G market is projected to surpass $15 billion by 2031, with leading players driving innovation: #Polestar has joined stakeholders in the electricity grid sector with a large-scale vehicle-to-grid project in Gothenburg (Sweden) #BMW is piloting vehicle-to-grid solutions within the city of Rotterdam (The Netherlands) #GM is running several large-scale pilots across North America However, V2G faces several challenges, including the need for BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) to ensure reliable energy supply when EVs are unavailable, as well as managing battery degradation from frequent charging and discharging. Panasonic has unveiled its first hydrogen-powered manufacturing plant in Cardiff, Wales! This state-of-the-art facility is a major leap in sustainable innovation, demonstrating how green hydrogen, solar PV, and advanced energy storage can drive industrial production. The Cardiff site is a pioneer in Panasonic’s goal of achieving 100% renewable electricity for its operations.
