When You Care for Your Employees! In Jun 2003, when I reported for my 1st In-Camp Training as Officer Commanding, on the parade square, there were over 130 men and officers from all walks of life that I met for the very first time. Over the next 10 days, we have to work together as a unit to execute various demanding tasks such as fitness tests, weapons proficiency test, parachuting, live firing and back to back mission exercises. My opening speech to the men "The next 10 days can be a holiday camp or we can leave the in-camp training feeling great having accomplished our objectives and at the same time have great fun together". The rest is history as seen from the letter below. Fast forward 20 years later, last year 2023, I took on several Work Study Diploma (WSD) students from Institute of Technical Education, two of them has a Grade Average Point of 1 and 2 out of a score of 4 respectively. Also they were majoring in Events and Human Resource Management respectively, nothing to do with logistics. During interview, I asked them, why they want to switch their major and join Logistics for their WSD, they both responded to me that they don't know and just wanted to try. Both got a good lecture from me, I told them if they want to join SFS, there is no such nonsense of don't know and just trying, both were shocked. Eventually, they accepted what lies ahead and I took them onboard. Currently after completing 2 semesters out of 5 for the 2.5 years WSD, they have a GPA of 4 and 3.8 an outstanding improvement in grades. Their first year with SFS they managed the Supply Chain Control Tower, then moved on to Airfreight Operations & Vaccines Management. Lying ahead for them will be more skills training to develop their soft-skills, critical thinking and core-competencies in logistics. Reflecting on my time in the military, I was given opportunity to learn and discover myself. This is my contribution back to the society and this is the outcome when you care for your soldiers (employees)! #careforsoldiers #everyemployeematters #skillstraining #mentoring

Why Promise Placements if You Can’t Deliver? Eight months ago, I joined International School of Skill Development for a course in Warehouse & Logistics, encouraged by their promise of placement support after completion. The course is now over, and there’s been no effort or initiative towards placements as promised. This raises a critical question: Why do institutions make commitments they cannot keep? For many students, placement support is a key factor when choosing a program, and failing to deliver on that promise feels not only unprofessional but misleading. I’m sharing my experience to ask others: • Have you faced similar issues with education providers? • What steps do you think should be taken to hold institutions accountable for their promises? Let’s discuss how we, as students and professionals, can push for better standards in education and training. #EducationAccountability #Placements #StudentVoices #ProfessionalGrowth

Event Highlights: Career Insights Panel with Dionne Smith-Castellano CPHR Candidate. One of the invaluable pieces of advice from Dionne Smith-Castellano, Talent Acquisition Specialist at CPKC Rail, for future SCM graduates, is to center on the importance of learning best practices and finding unique ways to apply that knowledge. She stressed that mastering industry standards and understanding proven methodologies is only the beginning. Dionne encouraged graduates to think outside the box and adapt these best practices creatively to fit different contexts and challenges. She highlighted that innovation often comes from taking established knowledge and tweaking it to address specific problems or improve existing processes. By applying what they learn in new and different ways, graduates can drive change and add significant value to their organizations. This approach not only helps in standing out in a competitive job market but also fosters a mindset of continuous improvement and adaptability—qualities that are crucial for long-term success in the dynamic field of supply chain management. Thank you very much Dionne for your presence. #scmcpkc2024 #expertspeakerseries #sabvcscmexpertspeakerseries

The theme for World Quality Week 2024 is 'Quality: From Compliance to Performance.' On HS2, over 32,000 people, including 1,600 apprentices, are delivering astonishing infrastructure to create Britain's new high-speed railway - it's a phenomenal undertaking. Compliance, of course, is critical and not something we should ever take for granted. It can take a huge effort to achieve it, especially in a highly-regulated environment. Getting the basics right isn't always easy. However, Quality should never be about 'just' compliance. For me, it's about increasing performance levels, adding value, being outcome-focused and never forgetting the customer - we are in service of them! For the week that's in it, take a few minutes to think about what quality means to you and your colleagues. How does it feature in the culture of your organisation? Does it stand shoulder to shoulder with other drivers like cost and schedule? What can you do to make things better? #worldqualityweek #cqi #hs2
