There he goes again. Alejandro Agag, founder of the Formula E and Extreme #Ebattery-electric racing series, is now taking aim at #fuelcell #electricvehicles and #greenhydrogen, too. The new Extreme H series will be a showcase for innovations in #fuelcell mobility, and that’s just the tip of the green hydrogen iceberg envisioned by Agag. From Formula E To EV Charging Stations With Green Hydrogen Formua E launched in September of 2013 as a branch of FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile), of the famous Formula 1 series. I caught the battery-powered action at the former Tempelhof Airport in Berlin in May of 2015, when Formula E was closing out its first season (see lots more Formula E stories here). The EV battery charging technology of nine years ago was not what it is today. Neither was battery-swapping technology, for that matter. The “Gen1” vehicles of the original Formula E came in identical pairs, enabling drivers to jump into a fresh EV to keep the race moving along, rather than waiting around to recharge or swap out the battery. Just three years later, in 2018, FIA ditched the car-switching strategy in favor of new EV batteries with enough range to finish a full race, no swapping allowed. Three years after that, the Extreme E off-road series launched with a green hydrogen twist. In order to recharge the batteries in off-grid locations along the course, Extreme E featured charging stations powered by hydrogen fuel cells. The stations followed the Extreme E series as it moved around the globe, demonstrating durability, reliability, and transportability for an off-grid, green-hydrogen EV battery charging solution. The green hydrogen for the fuel cells was produced from water by #electrolysis with the power provided by on-site #solarpanels, eliminating the need for a grid connection, and pushing fossil energy out of the hydrogen supply chain as well. Green Hydrogen In The Spotlight With Extreme H, Agag has pushed green hydrogen front and center, so much so that the new series is not an addition to Extreme E. Instead, it is described as a rebrand of Extreme E into a “new, more #environmentallyfriendly racing format.” Leaving that thing about more environmentally friendly aside for now, Agag is clearly among those eager to explore new challenges in the #zeroemission mobility field. “The evolution from Extreme E to Extreme H is one of the most thrilling advancements in motorsport and sustainable technology I have ever been part of,” Agag explains in a press statement. “This evolution promises not only faster and more intense racing, but also a significant step forward in exploring hydrogen as a sustainable and powerful energy source,” Agag enthuses.

The Mission H24 project (a collaboration between H24Project and Automobile Club de l'Ouest) unveiled their latest prototype, the H24EVO, set to revolutionize racing with hydrogen technology. 🔥 H24's Co-Presidents, Pierre Fillon and Jean-Michel Bouresche, along with the project's Technical Director, Bassel ASLAN, and two of the three dedicated test drivers, Stephane Richelmi and Adrien Tambay, attended the presentation. Partners like TotalEnergies, Symbio, Michelin, OPmobility, Dietsmann, and Richard Mille, have joined forces to drive this innovation forward. 🚘🌟 According to Pierre Fillon, Co-President of H24, "This prototype represents a huge opportunity, it will be the first hydrogen homologated car running in the history of motorsport. We are working to achieve this target." Featuring a cutting-edge 300 kW Symbio multi-stack fuel cell into the H24EVO prototype, Mission H24 aims to showcase the performance and potential of hydrogen fuel cell technology in racing environments. The new car design incorporates a tub from ADESS AG, which houses two 700 bar hydrogen tanks that store 7.8 kg of H2 (down from three tanks in the H24), a 400 kw lithium battery and an 872 horsepower electric motor. The H24EVO marks a significant leap forward in the Mission H24 program. Bassel Aslan, the project's Technical Director, emphasized, "We are aiming for a pace similar to the fastest GT3 cars, stint lengths of 30 minutes and a two-minute pit stop for refuelling, but this is just the beginning." This technology isn't just about speed; it's about shaping the future of racing and transportation. With the FIA paving the way for hydrogen technology in motorsport, the H24EVO remains at the forefront of this exciting development. Having looked at sustainable ways of powering race cars in the #future and weighed advantages and disadvantages of battery electric, #hydrogen  fuel cell, hydrogen combustion, e-Fuel combustion - which technology is best suited to power the race car of tomorrow? From an #engineering point of view, the answer seems rather simple. Battery-electric offers the highest efficiency in terms of energy that is actually used to propel the car forward. As I already discussed in Part 2 of this deep dive, there are however also the factors of marketing, image and commercialisation to be considered. If we take it as a given that combustion engines need to stay for those reasons, the obvious choice is a hydrogen engine. It would be more efficient than an #e-fuel which is just a conventional fuel like petrol except produced totally without fossil sources but at the expense of energy efficiency.   However, using hydrogen as fuel leaves other technical problems: Hydrogen has an extremely high energy density, which means it can explode much easier than petrol. To fit in a race car, it would have to be liquid, which means cooling it down to -253 °C. Severe additional safety measures to protect the fuel tank during a crash or to make refuelling at speed safe would have to be taken. A small hydrogen combustion engine paired with a battery and electric motors could form a powerful #hybrid power train. I believe if technical development is focused on making hydrogen as a combustion fuel source work, this could be the future of motorsport in 2035.

Hydrogen is muscling in on the EV in the Extreme E off road electric racing series. The Pioneer 25 hydrogen fuel cell-powered race car is now the world’s first hydrogen off-road racing championship after a win in England in June. The Road to Net Zero: How Racing Circuits Are Leading the Charge Towards Sustainability Motorsport has long been associated with speed, power, and innovation—but now it’s also becoming synonymous with sustainability. How are circuits making it happen? Many racing venues are now employing dedicated sustainability teams, whose primary role is to reduce the environmental impact of motorsport. These teams are focused on: - Implementing carbon offset programs and developing eco-friendly infrastructures. - Engaging with fans, sponsors, and partners to encourage sustainable practices throughout the motorsport community. - Advocating for and integrating sustainable fuel alternative in racing, such as biofuels and synthetic fuels. As motorsport tracks evolve, they demonstrate that speed and sustainability can coexist. Is This the Future of Supercars - Welcome to Alpenglow Hy4. Alpine's latest car, the Alpenglow Hy4, marks a pretty bold step into the future of automotive technology. This hydrogen-combustion supercar shows the performance potential of hydrogen but also looks at a shift in supercar engineering. The Alpenglow Hy4 is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, fuelled by hydrogen from high-pressure tanks. This innovative powerplant, capable of revving to 7000rpm and delivering up to 335bhp, promises performance on par with its petrol counterparts while emitting only water and significantly reducing toxic NOx emissions. What sets this development apart is its potential impact on both road and track. Alpine's hydrogen technology is more than just a demo; . With plans to replace the current ICE engine with a hydrogen-powered V6, Alpine aims to compete in the 2027 Le Mans 24 Hours, marking a historic shift toward decarbonising endurance racing. Alpine also dropped a hint at the possibility of hydrogen-powered engines finding their way into future road cars. I think it outlines what path future supercars will look like but also raises questions about the future of supercar engineering. The viability of hydrogen combustion engines hinges on the source of the hydrogen itself. and advancements in battery technology will surely slow the allure of hydrogen. Nevertheless, Alpine's hydrogen technology represents an alternative in the pursuit of sustainable performance. So Is this the future of supercars? 🚗 Yesterday, Extreme E evolved into Extreme H becoming the first hydrogen fuel cell-powered motorsport in the world. The off-road racing series will become the testing ground for hydrogen as a new source of energy in the transportation industry. With 75kW of power, the new hydrogen-powered cars can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds, but crucially their only emission is water vapor. Leakages and sourcing remain questions around hydrogen, but this could be a promising start for another alternative fuel source.
