I've been thinking a lot over the past few days about a statement Sharon Pearce made in a recent meeting. She said, "If you're not at the table, you're probably on the menu" when talking about the lack of nurses in #legislation and #advocacy. However, this statement rings true for every area of healthcare and means that if nurses aren't actively involved in decision-making processes, they risk being acted upon rather than being active participants in shaping their own profession and the care they provide. It's time for every nurse to gain a seat at the table. We can do this by: 🌟 Actively seeking out and demanding positions on committees, boards, and task forces where patient care and workforce decisions are made. 🌟 Sharing our frontline perspectives in meetings, conferences, and publications. 🌟 Building relationships with other healthcare professionals, administrators, and policymakers to open doors and create opportunities for collaboration and influence. 🌟 Seeking out leadership opportunities at all levels, from unit-based committees to hospital-wide initiatives. 🌟 Participating in and supporting nurse-led research, innovation projects, and advocacy efforts. This can help showcase the unique value nurses bring to the table and demonstrate their ability to drive positive outcomes. It's time for nurses to move from being "on the menu" to having a seat at every table where care, community, and health are discussed. Every small step forward adds to the collective work we're doing! A: I had the privilege of serving for nearly a decade as a health system leader and, during that time, partnered closely with nursing leaders and executives. This is another example where our reimbursement system is flawed because nurses are the largest workforce in every healthcare system and also provide the most care, yet we cannot get any nurse reimbursement. Q: Why did you want to be a Commissioner? A: I was inspired by the leadership of Rebecca Love RN, MSN, FIEL, and thought I could bring a unique perspective as both the son of a nurse and someone who has served in leadership roles in both healthcare and higher education. I’m also a passionate advocate with expansive experience in government affairs and advocacy.
