The field of Medicine, in general, and the specialty of Family Medicine in particular, share a lot of principles and practices with the field of Human Rights. Highlighting the interconnectedness of the two – especially for learners -- has been a passion of mine for decades through clinical practice, teaching, writing, advocacy, and research. A big 'Thank you' to Dr. Bill Ventres for providing one more venue for me to share my views via the essay: “Why family physicians should care about human rights”, as part of a wonderful collection of essays in BMJ Family Medicine and Community Health “Storylines of Family Medicine”. #HumanRights #Medicine #MedEd Check out other essays by, Shailendra Prasad Edgar Figueroa MD MPH Francis Chu David Blane Robert Ferrer Garrett Kneese and others.

https://lnkd.in/gPcxhdqk This is an interesting article since, given the times we are in with what feels like multiple crisis on top of hard economic circumstances, people are undoubtedly much more stressed. I think we just tend to assume the main ways that companion animals are affected is the question of mainly feeding, and healthcare, but it can even affect their mental health as well. I believe learning more about animal mental health could be useful for working in the veterinary field. Could the same also be true of cats, even if they aren’t canids? #DogMentalHealth #CanineCare

This is worth reading.
"The protection of research animals is assured through the certification program of the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC). CCAC certification is a condition of federal funding from Tri-Agency. It might be hard to imagine, but no such assurance program exists for the protection of humans in research. Please sign the House of Commons petition to ensure that oversight accountability of human research becomes the norm in Canada through accreditation, and that accreditation becomes a condition of Tri-Agency funding." I am a Site Reviewer for HRA Canada and a Technical Committee Member for multiple committees with the Human Research Standards Organization (HRSO). The accreditation of human research in Canada is overdue. Please sign and support! Happy to answer any questions. https://lnkd.in/g9BFX56D

"Wednesday 24th April is World Day for Laboratory Animals, originally started in the 1979 to commemorate the lives of laboratory animals. We have produced a short PowerPoint Presentation which contains a short video, a quiz and some extension activity ideas to help students learn about the use of animals in research today and the alternative research methods that are helping to replace animals. This resource is aimed at students aged 11-16 (Key stages 3&4)" https://lnkd.in/gPCtqxWt

Scripture is primarily intended for a listening, rather than a reading, audience. Wordplay, therefore, especially if witty and suggestive, kept the audience attentive. In this case, it is a double-entendre, “an idiom or other figure of speech that may be understood in two ways. The first is straightforward and innocuous, whereas the second is usually risqué.” https://lnkd.in/gBwVCPYC

Maintaining the streak of our Case Analysis Series, we found a snap clicked by a monkey. This made us wonder that even if it’s not established that humans are descended from monkeys, there exists some incident which draw our attention to the human like intellect of them. But does this mean that we should grant them rights over intellectual properties created by them? The same question has been answered in a 2018 US Case - Naruto, Through People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) v/s David John Slater .The United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit stated that animals do not have constitutional or statutory standing. With regards to statutory standing, the Court also mentioned that animals do not have any cognizable interests under the said laws. Therefore, animals through the above mentioned case, were restrained from getting their artistic creations protected, unless Congress decides otherwise.
