Dr. Sriram Raghavendran, MD’s Post

1. Propranolol helps to relieve the peripheral symptoms of anxiety in dose ranges between 20-40mg/day. It's particularly useful to manage peripheral physical symptoms and hence can be used by people with severe social anxiety to calm them down, say before an important presentation. (I would still prefer paroxetine) 2. It does nothing for Psychic anxiety - which is best managed by ssri and benzos, which are still the gold standard for managing anxiety disorders. 3. Old is gold, stick to propranolol - atenolol and pindolol not so much!

Beta-blockers are often used for #anxiety, but only 10 small controlled trials of 179 patients exist, and they came up negative in new metaanalysis (mainly propranolol, also atenolol, pindolol): https://lnkd.in/egwzGuEV This is not proof that they don't work. Rather, it's telling us we don't have proof that they do. Pindolol is the only med I know of with a controlled trial in treatment-resistant anxiety, although a very small one: https://lnkd.in/eNFvz5Yq #psychiatry #mentalhealth

Propranolol also works in aggression related to trauma ( post head), and some say in PTSD if given early can prevent from developing traumatic memories. Also yes, it works for physical symptoms of anxiety which may help in developing viscous cycle of cognitive anxiety, so can be best given with benzos.
