In our last (but not least) week of #AmericanPharmacistMonth coverage, we're shining the light on specialty pharmacists. Chelsee Jensen, PharmD, BCPS, is a senior #pharmacy specialist at the Mayo Clinic. Before she became a #pharmacist, Jensen wanted to become a nurse. However, after helping her grandmother organize and stay on track with various #medications, she decided to pursue a #career in pharmacy. In a conversation with Drug Topics, Jensen discussed some of the #rewards and #challenges she faces in her setting, a specific program she implemented that exemplifies the value of pharmacists in #patient care, what the biggest opportunities are for pharmacists to expand their role in patient care in today's health care landscape, and how #biosimilars will impact the pharmacy profession in the coming years. Here are some common misconceptions about pharmacists: 1. They Only Dispense Medications: Many people believe pharmacists only fill prescriptions, but they also provide medication management, health screenings, and patient education. 2. Pharmacists Don’t Need Advanced Education: Some think a pharmacy degree is not rigorous. In reality, pharmacists undergo extensive education and training, often requiring a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree. 3. Pharmacists Are Just "Pill Counters: This stereotype overlooks their critical role in ensuring medication safety, counseling patients on proper use, and monitoring for drug interactions. 4. They Can’t Prescribe Medications: While pharmacists typically don’t prescribe medications, many can provide certain services, including prescribing in some states or under collaborative practice agreements. 5. Pharmacists Work Only in Pharmacies: Pharmacists can work in various settings, including hospitals, clinics, research, and government agencies, contributing to public health in multiple ways. 6. Pharmacists Are Not Involved in Patient Care: Many people may not realize that pharmacists are integral to healthcare teams, providing valuable insights on medication therapy and patient treatment plans. 7. All Pharmacists Are the Same: There are different areas of specialization within pharmacy, such as clinical, community, industrial, and research, each requiring unique skills and knowledge. By addressing these misconceptions, you can help promote a better understanding of the vital role pharmacists play in healthcare. #pharmacies #happyPharmacistDay #healthcareprofessional

📚 Progress in My Pharm.D Journey As I entered my 5th year of Pharm.D, I can’t help but reflect on how much I’ve learned and grown in the field of pharmacy. From understanding complex pharmacological mechanisms to gaining hands-on experience with patient care, every step has been a challenge and a reward. Recently, I've been diving deeper into cardiovascular diseases and exploring how pharmacists can play a vital role in patient education and treatment management. It’s incredible how much impact we can have by providing clear, accurate information to patients, ensuring they understand the differences between conditions like heartburn and angina. Looking ahead, I’m excited to continue expanding my knowledge, sharpening my clinical skills, and preparing to contribute to the healthcare system in the most effective way possible. #Pharmacy #PharmD #Healthcare #MedicalEducation #PatientCare #Learning
