PVC cardiomyopathy in pets refers to a condition where animals, particularly dogs, develop an abnormal heart rhythm known as premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) due to underlying heart muscle disease. This irregular heart rhythm can cause the heart to pump less effectively, leading to symptoms such as weakness, lethargy, exercise intolerance, and even collapse. The exact cause of PVC cardiomyopathy is not always clear, but it is believed to be linked to genetic factors in some breeds. Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, electrocardiogram (ECG), echocardiogram, and possibly additional tests such as blood work or X-rays. Treatment for PVC cardiomyopathy in pets aims to manage the irregular heart rhythm, improve heart function, and alleviate symptoms. This may involve medications such as anti-arrhythmic drugs, beta-blockers, or ACE inhibitors. Lifestyle changes, such as reducing stress and avoiding strenuous exercise, may also be recommended. In severe cases, more advanced treatments such as pacemakers or surgery may be necessary. Regular monitoring is essential to assess the progression of the disease and adjust treatment as needed. With proper management, pets with PVC cardiomyopathy can lead fulfilling lives, although the condition is typically considered progressive and may require ongoing care. #cardiology #vet_cardiology

Coronary Artery Disease or Myocardial Ischemia
Ischemic heart disease in pets, also known as coronary artery disease or myocardial ischemia, is a condition characterized by a reduced blood flow to the heart muscle, leading to an inadequate supply of oxygen and nutrients. This can result in damage to the heart muscle over time. ### Causes: 1. Atherosclerosis: Similar to humans, pets can develop atherosclerosis, a condition where fatty deposits build up in the arteries, leading to narrowing and reduced blood flow. 2. Coronary artery embolism: Formation of blood clots that block blood flow in the coronary arteries. 3. Coronary artery spasm: Sudden constriction of the coronary arteries, reducing blood flow to the heart. ### Symptoms: 1. Exercise intolerance 2. Weakness or lethargy 3. Shortness of breath 4. Coughing 5. Fainting or collapse ### Diagnosis: 1. Physical examination 2. Blood tests 3. Electrocardiography (ECG) 4. Echocardiography 5. Cardiac catheterization ### Treatment: 1. Medications: Includes antiplatelet drugs, vasodilators, and medications to manage heart failure. 2. Diet and exercise: Weight management and a balanced diet can help in managing the condition. 3. Surgery: In severe cases, procedures like angioplasty or bypass surgery may be considered. ### Prognosis: The prognosis for pets with ischemic heart disease varies depending on the severity of the condition, the underlying cause, and the response to treatment. Early diagnosis and appropriate management can help improve the quality and length of life for affected pets. #cardiology_vet #vet

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) Medically Reviewed by Poonam Sachdev on June 24, 2024Written by Kendall K. Morgan What Is GERD?GERD CausesRisk Factors for GERDGERD Symptoms What Is GERD? Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, happens when acid from your stomach backs up into your esophagus, the tube connecting your stomach to your mouth. This digestive disorder affects the ring of muscle between your esophagus and your stomach. This ring is called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). If you have GERD, you may get heartburn or acid indigestion. Doctors think that some people may have it because of a condition called hiatal hernia. In most cases, you can ease your GERD symptoms through diet and lifestyle changes. But some people may need medication or surgery https://lnkd.in/gkxTYeYA

🚨 Post-Menopausal Bleeding: Don't Ignore It! 🩸 If you've gone through menopause and experience any vaginal bleeding, it's crucial to contact your GP for investigation. While there are many benign reasons for post-menopausal bleeding, in a small proportion of women, it could be a sign of something more serious, like cancer. As a gynaecologist, when a patient reports post-menopausal bleeding, I would: 1️⃣ Conduct a thorough examination to understand your medical history and assess any symptoms. 2️⃣ Perform an ultrasound scan to check the thickness of the womb's lining and look for any abnormalities. 3️⃣ Recommend a hysteroscopy if necessary, which involves inserting a camera into the uterus to view the lining directly and possibly take a biopsy. ❤️ Early detection is key to effective treatment. Please don't hesitate to seek medical advice if you notice any unusual bleeding.
