🗓️ 47 days until pre-proposal submissions are due for the $1 Million Adisseo Research Grant! 💡The proposed research projects should relate to innovative, nutritional approaches for poultry and swine, and all project proposals must justify how they are bringing significant, sustainable solutions to the industry. The research projects where nutritional approaches are considered should be positioned on one of the following axes: 1️⃣ Managing/Addressing the global challenges of climate change ✅Securing performance in hot conditions ✅Maximizing efficiency with the utilization of new raw materials ✅Optimizing water usage under challenging conditions   2️⃣ Applying the 'One-Health' concept in animal production ✅Exploring alternatives to medication: nutrition for resilience ✅Early feeding for improved performance and health ✅Nutrition and/or health management for enhanced weaning transition ✅Improving animal longevity, specifically laying hens and sows It is important to note that projects falling under these axes are preferred. #AutobioSci - Microbial Series 1.0🔬 🔍College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, UAE University published an article titled "Genomic insights into antimicrobial resistant Salmonella in internationally traded chicken meat: First baseline findings in the United Arab Emirates" in the journal "Journal of Agriculture and Food Research"[Q1 journal; lmpact Factor: 3.8] 🌾The case from the UAE, a country known for being a major importer of food, set a good model for using the Autof MS1000 in microbial food safety research. It mentions that Autof MS1000 is a reliable tool for the identification of one of the major food-borne pathogens, non-typhoidal Salmonella, in internationally traded chicken meat. 🧬 Unveiling Sarcocystic Cysts: Sarcocystic cysts are parasitic infections caused by the protozoan parasite Sarcocystis, affecting both animals and humans. While often under the radar, these parasites can cause significant health issues and economic losses in livestock industries. 🔬 Life Cycle & Mode of Infection The life cycle of Sarcocystis involves two hosts: Definitive Host: Carnivores (including humans) ingest muscle tissue containing mature cysts. The cysts release infective stages in the intestines, leading to the parasite shedding eggs (oocysts) in the environment. Intermediate Host: Herbivores like cattle, sheep, and pigs ingest these oocysts through contaminated food or water. The parasite then migrates into their muscles, forming cysts that can be passed to carnivores. Humans are typically infected by consuming undercooked or raw meat containing these cysts, which is why food safety is crucial. 📍 Site of Predilection The cysts typically form in skeletal muscles, heart, and occasionally in the brain. In animals, this can cause muscle weakness, fever, and poor body condition. In humans, symptoms vary but may include muscle pain, fever, and gastrointestinal discomfort. 🧪 Diagnosis & Judgment Sarcocystosis can be detected through: Microscopic examination of muscle tissue for cysts. Serological tests to detect antibodies. Molecular diagnostics for precise identification. Preventing economic losses in livestock requires routine meat inspection to identify infected animals before meat enters the food chain. ✅ Prevention & Control For humans: Cook meat thoroughly to kill cysts. Avoid consuming raw or undercooked meat from potentially infected animals. For livestock: Implement good hygiene practices in farms, prevent contamination of feed and water, and conduct regular health monitoring. As we advance in understanding parasitic diseases, increased awareness and research into parasitic control measures will help mitigate the impact on both human and animal health. During the antimicrobial resistance awareness week, 18-24 November, IPC wants to reiterate the importance of TRANSFORM project. TRANSFORM is a current active private sector led USAID Global Health Security activity with two overall objectives: 1) Strengthen global health security via improved #AnimalhHealth 2) Increase access to safe, affordable, high-quality animal-sourced nutrition This USAID-funded project is led by Cargill and includes Heifer International and IPC. Antimicrobial agents targeting disease-causing bacteria have been discovered, developed, and used for more than 80 years in the fields of human medicine, food animal production, and in plant agriculture. Concurrent with the use, and sometimes misuse, of these agents AMR has developed in pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria. These bacteria have been transmitted among animals, plants, and humans via consumption of contaminated food and the environment. With the increased prevalence of resistant bacteria there has been a decrease in the number of remaining effective options for therapeutic antimicrobial agents. Untreatable diseases in food animals leads to increased death loss, higher food production costs, and potentially less animal-sourced protein. In order to mitigate these risks, we must take proactive measures to maintain animal health, which avoids the need for the use of therapeutic antibiotics, and when treatment is needed, ensure antimicrobials are used appropriately. This is what IPC advocates and practices every day, also through TRANSFORM and thanks to the support of IPC's members who have endorsed IPC's Position Statement on Antimicrobial Use and Antimicrobial Stewardship Principles. #WAAW #AMR #AntiMicrobialResistance #TRANSFORM
