As we head back to another working week I’m feeling reenergised following the ACWA 2024 Conference Working Together. Reflecting over the weekend and reviewing some great catch-ups and knowledge sharing I’ve re-set three key commitments: 1. Continue advocating for better data to guide the story that helps to better understand all children including the many from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds in care 2. Continue encouraging conversations that better hear the voice of children, parents and carers - and helps practices better value the importance of connections to culture, history, family, community and connections for all children 3. Reflecting on those strong loud words from the voice of lived experiences … Actions matter. Actions Let the next phase of working together begin…

Apprenticeships are powerful and provide a pathway for individuals to earn while they learn, gaining industry-relevant skills that employers value. If you're in Colorado, take the next step by registering with the Colorado Apprenticeship Office. if you registered before July 1, 2023 attend one of these events and work 1:1 with staff to update your program standards. This can open doors to opportunities in industries like advanced manufacturing, healthcare, construction, and more.
Was your apprenticeship program registered before Colorado became a State Apprenticeship Agency on July 1, 2023? Do you still need to revise your Program Standards on file with us? Apprenticeship Colorado’s Program Development Team is hosting a series of in-person events from October to December for Sponsors to revise their Program Standards. During the Revision Round-Up Event, you will go through your Standards step-by-step with their staff and work on your revisions with them. #gainfulemployment What is the 😳 gainful employment rule? "Broadly gainful employment refers to an employment situation where the employee receives steady work, payment from the employer and that allows for self-sufficiency." "In psychology, gainful employment is a positive psychology concept that explores the benefits of work and employment. Second only to personal relationships, work is the most important determinant of quality of life.[1][2] Over 7855 articles were published on job satisfaction between the years 1976 and 2000." "The technical definition of gainful employment is paid employment for not less than 30 hours per week for a period of no less than 12 months. To be gainfully employed also means that you are self-sufficient in your employment, and do not require monetary assistance from sources outside your work."

Would you rather make $111,205 or $213,855? A lot of people pick $111K without realizing it. Back in 2003, I was making $65,000 as a branch manager. If I earned an annual 3% increase, that would be $111,295 today. But in 2005, I found a better opportunity with a new employer who paid me $125,000. If I had stayed with that employer and earned the same 3% annual raise, that $125,000 would now be $213,855. More than $100,000 more a year… Just by looking for something better. So many people get stuck in Groundhog Day and forget the opportunities that are out there. If you’re: • Talented • Ambitious • Hard-working ... There are literally unlimited opportunities out there for you. But it’s easy to keep doing the same thing you’ve always done. It’s easy to accept your position in life. It’s easy to stay put. But here’s a question I’d like to ask every talented person who thinks their career is “good enough”: Why be mediocre when you can be remarkable? -- P.S. Revamping Job Centres is a Great Start, But Let’s Go Further 🫡 The government’s new White Paper on getting more people into work and reducing welfare spending has sparked a lot of conversation. Revamping job centres is a great step forward - it’s exciting to see, especially since it aligns with what our group pitched to Varun Chandra and the panel at the Goldman Sachs 10KSB hackday last week 😎 At the same time, I was struck by a story on the radio about someone who’d finished their A-Levels but felt lost - giving up on both job and university applications. It’s heartbreaking to think about wasted potential when so many SMEs are struggling to hire because of cost pressures. I'm thinking one thing the government could do alongside job centre reforms is offer more support for SMEs to hire apprentices. The training costs are covered, but wages remain a big hurdle. ⭐What if the government covered half the wages for the first six months?⭐ That small change could make a huge difference. In tech, for example, many apprentices are contributing to the bottom line within those first six months. It’s a win-win: helping young people into meaningful work while giving SMEs the talent they need to grow. What do you think? Could this work? #Apprenticeships #SMEs #GovernmentPolicy #10ksbuk #TalentPipeline https://lnkd.in/eGBjSsHi

I am pleased to see the subject of apprenticeships move up the Government’s agenda. I have not only been banging this drum for a long time, but at Focus SB Ltd we have put our money where our mouth is and have invested in several apprentices over the last few years, some of whom are full time skilled employees and others are still in their apprenticeships (4 in total) and collectively they make up a significant proportion of our total workforce and we are always looking to add to these numbers! UK manufacturers need to invest in future skills if we are to continue with our impressive standing in world rankings and the valuable contribution UK manufacturing makes to our GDP. #ukmfg #apprenticeships
Great news as the PM Rishi Sunak announces apprenticeship support for small businesses. Focus SB's Managing Director Gary Stevens, "who came through the ranks as an apprentice" himself, and who became an Enterprise Adviser in 2017 to help build relations with local schools and colleges, is quoted in the House of Commons during a speech made by Hastings and Rye Conservative MP Sally-Ann Hart following her first visit to our factory on 24th August 2021, when she met some of our apprentices. Untapped: Closing America's Opportunity Gap (Documentary) This. Is. Mandatory. Viewing. !!! Netflix. Featuring Mark Cuban, and CEOs from GM, JPMorganChase, Walmart and more. This inspiring documentary, now available on Netflix, follows the incredible journeys of six Year Up United graduates as they navigate their paths to success through our job training program. Witness how they break through barriers, seize opportunities, and launch successful careers at top companies who are prioritizing skills-first talent practices, redefining what it means to be a "qualified” job candidate. I found this fascinating . . . Transcript excerpt: In fact, 95% of the civilization around us was built by people without bachelor's degrees. As early as 1909, only 9% of Americans went to high school. But by 1939, 79% of American teenagers were going to high school. The reason it happened is because communities across the country wanted to see their children be able to get what you would then call the jobs of the future. Secretaries, telegraph operators, it might be to work in a car factory. There were all these new jobs that were better jobs than the people wanted. And high schools were a mass movement that allowed people to get those broad-based skills for those jobs. World War II came, the GI Bill came, now you started having mass college education. We needed more doctors, more nurses, we needed more engineers. But then sometime around the early '80s, there was this report that came out. This presidential commission called A Nation at Risk. We've taken a long, hard look at America's educational system and found that quality is lacking. One of the things it said is that our high schools are a disaster because they weren't preparing students to succeed in college. Our high schools were never designed to help students succeed at college, they were designed to help them succeed at life. ================= Produced by The SpringHill Company and Workaday
