A first to remember: Zhong Ren 121’s debut in Hamburg The vessel of our JSI Alliance member SAL Heavy Lift, Zhong Ren 121, made its debut at the port of Hamburg on Saturday, carrying an extraordinary cargo for our client, Liebherr Maritime Cranes . The shipment included three massive ship-to-shore cranes, each measuring 135 meters long, 31 meters wide, and 43 meters high, with a unit weight of 1,750 tons. These cranes, destined for the HHLA Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA), mark a significant upgrade to the port's operational efficiency. The journey began in CobhCork, Ireland, where the cranes were rolled onto the vessel using SPMTs via the starboard side. Discharging the cranes in Hamburg, however, poses a unique challenge. Due to the high quay level at the terminal, the team engineered an innovative solution: the vessel was moored perpendicular to the quay, with the stern aligned for roll-off operations. Precise ballasting and tide timing were crucial to ensure the stern reached the quay level. This impressive operation required meticulous planning and coordination, particularly navigating under the Köhlbrandbrücke during low tide, leaving just three meters of clearance between the cranes and the bridge. The arrival also necessitated temporary restrictions on traffic along the Elbe River and at the terminal during discharge, showcasing the complexity of handling such extraordinary cargo. These state-of-the-art automated dual trolley ship-to-shore cranes will play a vital role in enhancing container handling capabilities at one of Europe’s busiest ports. ICYMI CWA — A member of Norda Stelo — designed a rail car unloading system that integrates a tandem rotary railcar dumper capable of unloading rail cars in pairs to achieve an 8,000 tonnes/hour throughput. The spotting and movement of railcars through the receiving station is automated using indexing equipment capable of positioning and translating the railcars without the need to disconnect them or disrupt the setup of the string. The design of an innovative recirculating dust collection system allowed the railcar unloading rate to double while remaining within air emissions typical for approximately one half the throughput. #engineering #materialhandling #drybulk

[NEWS] Luka Koper in the Port of Koper (Luka Koper), Slovenia, has ordered four Konecranes electric Rubber-Tired Gantry (RTG) cranes to replace old RTGs in its container yard. Koper also has plans to construct a new quayside and container yard with additional storage space. The new Konecranes RTGs will be powered by cable reel systems connected to the local grid, like the electric Konecranes RTGs that Koper already operates. They will also have auxiliary batteries and the Truck Lift Prevention smart feature. “Konecranes RTGs give us the high peak performance we need, and the cranes are reliable and easy to maintain. We have a long-term electrification strategy, and so does Konecranes, which makes this order a natural next step in the long-term cooperation between the two companies,” says Mr. Edvin Boškin, Technical Manager of the Container Terminal. “Fully electric container handling operations are built step by step, with a commitment that that is unwavering and lasts for years. Checking out the new Liebherr Tower Cranes 33L tower crane, with expert Scholz Tobias at the Liebherr Group 75th anniversary press conference. Launched in March 2024, the compact crane has an all new ‘active assistance’ operating system. Tobias: “This system means customers can simply hook up a load and the crane will automatically move the hook into the correct position for lifting. "This makes it both safer and quicker to use. The 33L also comes with automatic sway control built in and slew limiting for the safe movement of loads next to train lines, for example.                                                                                                                                                  “It’s a very compact crane which can be erected quickly and easily transported on roads, making it ideal for smaller projects and house building.” When it comes to powering the crane, Liebherr has designed a portable battery solution tailored for its crane fleet. It’s called the Liduro Power Port (LPO) 100. For a zero emissions solution at the point of use, the LPO 100 can be towed to the site with the crane or connected to the grid. Tobias: “The crane has a maximum hook height of 21.3 m with a lifting capacity of 4000kg and a maximum radius of 30m.
