How do you stand up for yourself? It's taken me a long time to understand that, especially considering the cultural norms I learned as a Filipino and Asian-American. Keep your head down. Don't make waves. Work hard and everything will take care of itself. David Nungaray describes the power in asking for what you need: understanding advocacy for yourself in this #RONderings clip. https://lnkd.in/eCP3A53e

This is the comment I received from a colleague about my recent story published in Satakieli: "I have not thought before how hard it should be for immigrants to succeed in the arts industry." It made me glad that my article, as a freelancer for this media, could raise awareness of one issue, of the many attached to the layers of the migrant's experience. Hopefully, it could spark someone else's curiosity to dig further into the topic. #Journalism #Immigrants #Satakieli

6/24: UC Irvine - “‘Efforts to reduce disparities and inequality in the justice system must include the limited English proficient (LEP) population…Certainly, language barriers have the potential to impact justice system outcomes.’” “The U.S. Department of Justice recently launched its Law Enforcement Language Access Initiative (LELAI), a nationwide effort to assist law enforcement agencies in meeting their obligations to provide meaningful language assistance to LEP individuals. The initiative is being led by the Civil Rights Division’s Federal Coordination and Compliance Section and the U.S. Attorneys’ Offices via COPS. LELAI offers guidance on legal obligation to access, appropriate tools and resources, sample access plans, policies, and forms, translated Miranda warnings, information on machine translation, and funding sources for LEP populations.” “‘Access resources are needed and the federal government taking a lead with the LELAI is an important first step,’ Rodríguez says. ‘However, little is known about the proportion of LEP persons in communities, their frequency in the justice system, and the needs of LEP individuals with regard to language access. This information is vital if resources are to be used and be effective on the ground.’” MacArthur Foundation

🚨 Translation is a political act 🚨 In collaboration with UNFPA Latin America and the Caribbean UNAIDS and Fòs Feminista we’re proud to announce the upcoming launch of the #Spanish edition of our Pleasure Training Toolkit. But this is more than just translating words. Translation is about #power—it’s about who gets access to critical #knowledge and who is left out of the conversation. By making this toolkit available in Spanish, we’re taking a stand for the democratization of #SexualRights and ensuring that essential knowledge about a pleasure-based approach is accessible AND context specific. 💥 Sexuality and pleasure are #political. For too long, they’ve been shaped by systems of oppression and control that silence voices from marginalized communities and #language is one of those systems. By translating resources like this toolkit, we’re challenging the gatekeepers of knowledge who perpetuate inequality through language barriers. We believe in a world where sexual knowledge is a right, not a luxury. Where pleasure is political, and #empowerment is shared equally. 👀 Watch this space for more updates, because the Spanish edition is coming soon. Stay tuned for the official launch event! ✊ #PleasureIsPolitical #TranslationAsLiberation #DemocratizingSexualRights #ToolkitForPleasure #BreakingBarriers #AccessForAll #PleasureMatters
