Over my 20-year career in Marketing and PR, I have worked with people of various nationalities. The sensibilities of different nations make it interesting for the PR professionals to showcase their skills. A global market like UAE gives an opportunity to people to hone PR skills that can be utilized in any part of the world. Dubai is the training ground for communication professionals as it tests all the necessary skills needed to progress in the field.
When we work in any other nation, we say that the first fifteen minutes should be utilized to understand the client and adjust the approach accordingly. However, imagine you learning from your last meeting with a communication head from Switzerland, and then suddenly you jump into a meeting with a firm that is led by an Arab – trust me there is a huge difference between the way the two meetings will be handled. And this is what I like about Dubai that it gives you enough ammo over the years to shine in all kinds of situations and clients of any nationality.
However, many professionals when coming to this place don’t give much attention to the beautiful Emirati culture. The need is to have a perfect blend or fusion of Emirati culture and global aspects. These Emirati values, when imbibed routinely, can help in honing the skills and add value to the personality. Take for example, Emirati Hospitality can manifest through personalized interactions, attentive listening, and genuine care for stakeholders; Hierarchical Respect and family-centric values aspect of Emirati culture can help establish trust and credibility in PR efforts.
