AD HOC V. INSTITUTIONAL ARBITRATION. Knud Jacob Knudsen of Simonsen Vogt Wiig organised a panel discussion in Oslo that explored the use of ad hoc arbitration in Norway and discussed whether institutional arbitration should be used more frequently. From the DIA perspective, advantages of institutional arbitration include: 1. experience and expertise in selecting tribunals 2. arbitrator challenges not decided by tribunals 3. greater predictability regarding procedure 4. greater predictability regarding fees 5. greater assurance regarding enforceability of awards. Institutions are also able to gather and share knowledge, such as through the DIA’s newsletter, and provide nudges in arbitration practice such as greater appointment of women arbitrators. The panel was made up of Christian Hauge, Marie Nesvik, Christian Reusch, Madeleine Thörn, Henrik Sajakorpi and Andrew P.. The DIA looks forward to further Nordic collaboration and to building on the Nordic’s strengths such as rule of law, lack of corruption, and progress regarding the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Are you an arbitrator considering going solo? If so, join us online for tips and tricks at our panel discussion of 13 June, hosted by AtlAS (Atlanta International Arbitration Society)!
It is time to register for the AtlAS June Plenary Meeting for an event you do not want to miss: Join us on Thursday, June 13, 2024, at 11:00 AM EDT, for the AtlAS June Plenary Meeting. AtlAS will host a panel of esteemed international arbitration practitioners. Each of these practitioners spent many years – sometimes decades – practicing at one or more large law firms. More recently, each of them has left that environment to set up their practices as solo arbitrators. The panel will be titled “The Advantages, Challenges, and Experience of Moving from a Large Law Firm to Practice as a Solo Arbitrator,” and will feature Dorothee Schramm (Geneva), Isabel Fernandez de la Cuesta (New York), Javier Rubinstein, FCIArb(Chicago), and David B. Wilson (Denver). AtlAS’s own Shelby Grubbs (Atlanta) will moderate the panel. The meeting will be (entirely) virtual.
