Today the federal government announced an end to the Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles (iZEV) program. This will result in an immediate decline in zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) sales across Canada. Making matters worse is the fact that Canada added fewer public ZEV charging stations last year compared to 2023 when the charging infrastructure rollout should be accelerating. Regulated ZEV sales targets were already unrealistic, now they are impossible. Federal and provincial ZEV mandates must be reconsidered. https://lnkd.in/emEsWaG9

On Parliament Hill today with Brian Kingston from CVMA and David C. Adams from GAC to call for an end to the Federal EV mandates. In the wake of the Federal Government abruptly ending the electric vehicle purchase incentives and a failure to build adequate public charging infrastructure in Canada it is time for both the Federal and Provincial governments to get rid of these ill-conceived programs and to work with industry to formulate a realistic, consumer demand-driven alternative. Additionally, we urgently call on Transport Canada to work with CADA, our Provincial Associations and the manufacturers to find solutions for the thousands of customers that have bought cars in the last weeks based on the promise by the Federal government that they would receive a purchase incentive and are now left stranded because of the sudden cancelation. https://lnkd.in/eBnbAsbk

As expected, it is being reported by various sources that Labour are due to officially announce the 2030 ban on new petrol/diesel cars. There are immediate power constraints from the grid (although this will not be an issue in the mid to long term). Fully funded solutions and government grants for EV charging are plentiful right now but they are predicted to reduce down YoY as we head toward the 2030 target. Electricity, electricity distribution, and chargers in that order. When all that is done and private EV sales increase. Then, whichever shade of government is in power, none fossil fuel vehicle tax will rise to equal or more likely be higher than current taxes on petrol and diesel. There’s no such thing as a free lunch. The services the UK people demand have to be paid for through taxes or borrowing. Forget more borrowing. My prediction, taxes based on distance travelled. Transport will never reduce in cost.

EV - The European EV market has dramatically collapsed after all the tax breaks were stopped. This is not a surprise. Meaning Britain’s now Europes number 1 EV car market.

Trump attack on green new scam: Incentives for EVs and heat pumps revoked and emission standards rolled back. During his first mandate, Trump went through a lengthy process to weaken emission standards across all polluting sectors. Big Three automakers losing money on EVs will be pleased to replay the old movie of focusing on the more profitable big SUV gas guzzlers. EV prices will remain too high for many in the U.S. Canada will follow, as usual, in U.S. footsteps, especially with the likely next Prime Minister, Pierre Poilièvre. The U.S. and Canadian innovation gap with China and, to a lesser extent, with the EU, will get wider. The gap is already very huge.
