Saluting African American female professors -- Past and Present This week, the African American Female Professor Award Association in Massachusetts will induct its 2024 class of educators. View the video to honor those educators on whose shoulders we stand and learn about ways find success in academia. A special thanks to Traci Talbert, founder of the African American Female Professor Awards for her leadership. According to a U.S. News and World Report survey of nearly 1,000 colleges and universities, "...only about 7% of full-time faculty in fall 2022 were Black. The majority of full-time faculty in 2022 – 72% – were white." U.S. News also reports that " things haven't changed much from fall 2018," based on similar data from the National Center for Education Statistics, which found that 75% of full-time U.S. faculty were white." YAAAASSSSSSSS! Everything that Jessica Sawko said right here! 👇 Speaking at the State Board of Education: https://lnkd.in/e_9SnUiR Link to EdSource Article: https://lnkd.in/e-bkZh_J Many advocacy moments, visits to the state capitol, and letters of support from STEM and Ed organizations Exploratorium, K12 Alliance, CA STEM Network Children Now, CA County Superintendents, Ten Strands, CA NGSS Collaborative and of course, STEM4Real made this happen! Some comments from the field: "If we are testing students in science, it should be counted!" "Without a science indicator on the Dashboard, many districts are at risk of further deprioritizing science instruction." "This is a serious equity issue because it impacts future access to STEM careers and students’ ability to engage in civic activities related to STEM." What do you think? Comment below! https://lnkd.in/eK7ctPCk
Getting a call from John Fensterwald on the issue of science on the Dashboard took me back in time. As I have continued to reflect on the long road of NGSS standards implementation that I had the pleasure of starting in 2010, I took some time to trace some of the key moments in the work to incorporate science into our accountability system. I found this mic drop moment from a March 2016 State Board of Education meeting when Trish Boyd Williams made the case for science better than anyone I have ever witnessed. Trish, it is time to celebrate! This would not be a reality without your tireless support. In case you want to see this moment, here is the link: https://lnkd.in/eJg_JsBP. There were so many amazing people who I had the pleasure of working with over the last 10+ years who got us to this point. As Patricia Rucker was right to often remind us, as soon as you start listing folks, you are going to end up leaving someone out. I am going to try and to it anyway...the amazing folks that helped turn the dream of science on the Dashboard into reality include Trish Boyd Williams Ilene W. Straus Michael W. Kirst Sue Burr Lisa Hegdahl Janet Auer Anita Miller Arron Jiron Samantha Tran Jane Steinkamp Laura Henriques Peter A'Hearn Marian Murphy-Shaw Rick Pomeroy Dean Gilbert Stephen Pruitt Susan Zwiep Dawn OConnor Anthony Quan Efrain Mercado Cindy Kazanis Karen Stapf Walters, Jill Grace, Shawna Metcalf, Stephen Blake, Kirk Brown Virginia Oberholzer Vandergon Jenny Chien Mena Parmar Wendy Hagan, Lori Walsh, Jeff Orlinsky, Joanne Michael Kathy DiRanna Maria Chiara Simani Shay Fairchild Nathan Inouye Linda Tolladay Nathan Fairchild, Leena Bakshi McLean, Ed.D Jenna Porter Will Parish Karen Cowe Gerald Lieberman, Ph.D. and many, many more!

Vale Daniel Kahneman. We’ve lost one of the truly great minds. From the popular works disseminating knowledge like ‘Thinking, Fast and Slow’ and ‘Noise: A flaw in human judgement’ through to his ground breaking academic work on prospect theory heuristics like anchoring, availability bias and loss aversion he has truly changed the world and how we see and understand ourselves. Two notable contributions which I used in my personal life are: - Peak end rule: our memory of experiences are the average of the peak and end points so I always make sure to celebrate with teams and families at the end of a big piece of work or a holiday. It is often the only aspect of the memory we get some control over and doubles the chances of it being a great memory. - The Day Reconstruction Method to assesses how I actually spend my time and how my experience varies across the various activities and settings. We typical undervalue the experience in determining the value of our most precious resource: 🕰️ time. “Odd as it may seem, I am my remembering self, and the experiencing self, who does my living, is like a stranger to me.” “The easiest way to increase happiness is to control your use of time. Can you find more time to do the things you enjoy doing?”
The Global Association of Applied Behavioural Scientists (GAABS) is deeply saddened to learn of the passing earlier today of Professor Daniel Kahneman. Danny was a pioneer and an inspiration to many. Recipient of the 2002 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences his work has touched and impacted the lives of millions. We are deeply indebted for his support over the years serving as one of our Academic Advisors and extend our heartfelt condolences to his friends and family.

Congratulations to Dr. Maggie Bowman, who successfully defended her dissertation this week. Maggie's (incredibly timely) study is entitled “I Need the Administrators to be More in the Trenches Right Now”: A Phenomenological Study of the Experiences of White Educators Centering Critical Lessons on Race in the Classroom. Dr. Bowman's findings offer clarity in a number of areas: 1) lessons about the realities of race and systemic racial inequities in the United States do not, in fact, equate to teaching Critical Race Theory, 2) educators engaging in this important work need support and clear communication from administrators, and 3) educators need coalitions among themselves in order to sustain this work. It's been an honor to learn from Dr. Bowman. Not pictured, but to whom immense gratitude is owed: Maggie's committee members, Dr. Aura Wharton-Beck, Ed.D. and Dr. Muffet Trout, Ph.D. Congratulations, Dr. Bowman!!
