Have you heard of the soil mineral carbon pump? It is derived from the idea of the soil microbial carbon pump, which is a more established concept, and emphasizes the multiple and complex interaction of soil organic matter with minerals. “…We show that microbial necromass can make up more than half of soil organic carbon. Hence, we suggest next-generation field management requires promoting microbial biomass formation and necromass preservation to maintain healthy soils, ecosystems, and climate” Part of the problem with our current soil carbon methods is they aren’t measuring the right thing. We really should be measuring both labile and stable soil carbon and building high microbial biomass into the equation. Recent crediting of ACCUs to projects managed by Carbonlink demonstrates this point very well. Read the attached article from Dr David Johnson (Johnson-su creator)

Basile-Doelsch et al. explain that carbon from plant litter is stored in the soil through several key processes:  Biotransformation: The breakdown of organic matter by microorganisms. Bioturbation: The mixing of soil by organisms like earthworms. Translocation: The movement of carbon within the soil. Diffusion: The spread of carbon through soil particles. Stabilization: The long-term storage of carbon in the soil. As carbon goes through these processes, some of it is released as carbon dioxide through mineralization some is lost through erosion, and some becomes dissolved organic carbon in soil.

CIRIA’s Soil Community of Practice (CoP) convened a stakeholder workshop on 1 February 2024 to explore alternative policy and regulatory approaches for excavated soils and other materials on development projects. The desired outcomes from the workshop included examining what good regulation and policy in this area would look like, the benefits that could be achieved, and the barriers to change. This,https://lnkd.in/e9viz6FM the third of tree papers, provides shortlisted ‘options to consider’ for future improved policy and regulation of excavated materials, which can be considered akin to a ‘green paper’. This follows the first paper, which provided the basis for the workshop and the key considerations that informed it, and the second paper which provided details of the scope and factual outputs from the workshop.
