In particular, the timber industry underpins vitally important supply to the Australian design, manufacturing, construction and property sectors. Three quarters of NSW sawn timber is used in home construction across Australia, of which 5% is used by the kitchen sector alone, with a further 20% used by the furniture industry (Timber NSW). Maerua Mall in Windhoek, Namibia, is currently under transformation. The 61 500m2 GLA existing centre’s reconfiguration has been designed by MDSArchitecture for owners Oryx Properties Limited. Various sections of the mall have been categorised and colour coded according to the climatic regions of Namibia including Caprivi, Central Highlands, Kalahari, Great Ridge, and Namib. The first phase, the Central Highlands, features a newly upgraded entrance with a new open piazza area and additional restaurants. Wooden slats are a strong feature complemented by greenery and rocks in keeping with the theme and bringing a natural softness to the urban space. To create visual interest in the contemporary design, materials are exposed including i-beams, timber, and concrete. A complex reconfiguration, existing rocks are being reused and will feature prominently with several changes in elevation. The planting is low maintenance, fitting with the earthy colour palette and stone tiles. In the city of Satara, located within the Maharashtra state of India, traditional Wada Architecture of the region is reflected in a residence on the shores of a lake. Cultural heritage, technological advancements, and natural surroundings were the key considerations when designing the home, which has a central courtyard and utilizes exposed brick facades with breezeblocks. From the outside of the home, it appears as a fortress, while once inside, it opens up into the expansive courtyard, which allows for an abundance of natural light to filter into the living spaces via strategically placed doors and windows. The openings also allow for the movement of natural airflow through the home, lowering it’s need for manufactured air. Native and locally sourced vegetation adorn the courtyard, providing shade and natural cooling. Rooftop gardens, planters on the facade and terraces offer further green space to the home and are a source of privacy while also cleaning the air. A rainwater collection system reduces water usage by storage and recycling it for the gardens. Advanced insulation and a smart climate control system, lower energy usage and waste, which lowers the overall carbon footprint of the home. The home takes a contemporary approach to traditional architecture that focuses on reducing waste and energy usage. Love this parking structure! The Joseph Street Parking Structure is a stunning example of how great design meets functionality! Built with Kiwi Newton’s innovative Kiwi CarPark System, this 174,149-square-foot structure offers 640 parking spaces while showcasing the efficiency and precision of modular and prefabricated construction. Its zig-zag aluminum panel façades and dynamic colored lighting, designed by award-winning architect Peter Blitstein, make it a standout feature in Kitchener’s urban landscape. Using a smart two-bay layout with a sloped design, the structure eliminates the need for separate ramps, creating a seamless helical traffic flow. The Kiwi CarPark System allowed this project to come together faster, more sustainably, and with reduced costs while ensuring the highest quality.
