Improving Biodiversity by Removing Invasive Plant Species at Local Park On Thursday, September 12th, twenty-four (24) employees from the Durex Industries’ campus volunteered to remove invasive plant species in cooperation with the Cary Parks Department, located in Cary, Illinois. Under the direction of Cary Park Staff, the Durex volunteers were led to various locations within Hoffman Park to perform brush cutting and removals to improve site biodiversity. District staff members teamed up with each Durex group to help with questions and volunteer assistance. The area where the group worked is a prairie that was considered in critical condition due to the invasive species. Through the removal efforts, the prairie will now have the opportunity for the local biodiversity to flourish. The main goals of these efforts were to: · Free the prairie areas of exotic brush and trees that are choking out the prairie and reducing biodiversity and sustainability of this prairie space. · Free up existing remnant prairie from exotic brush and trees and increase biodiversity and sustainability in the area. Hoffman Park is 265 acres which is mostly farmland, but also features a prairie pothole wetland and forty acres of woodland, savanna, and remnant prairie. In 2010 the Park District added other amenities, which included an off-leash dog play area, accessible fishing pier, nature observation shelter, accessible community garden plots, demonstration worm-farm, picnic shelter, restrooms, 4,000 linear feet of trail, and wind and solar alternative energy sources. In 2018 the Park District also added a Disc Golf Course. Appreciation goes to all our volunteers who participated in this biodiversity event, and to the leadership of Mathias and Rocio for coordinating these efforts with the Cary Parks Department. #biodiversity #nature #community #teamwork

International Sloth Day is celebrated on October 20th each year to raise awareness about these unique animals and the conservation challenges they face. Sloths are fascinating creatures known for their slow movement and unique adaptations to a life spent in the treetops of Central and South America. Belonging to the order Pilosa, sloths are categorized into two main families: two-toed and three-toed sloths. Their distinct physiological traits and behaviors have evolved over millions of years, allowing them to thrive in their rainforest habitats. One of the most notable features of sloths is their incredibly slow metabolism. This adaptation helps them conserve energy, as their diet mainly consists of leaves, which are low in nutrients. By moving slowly, sloths reduce the amount of energy they expend, allowing them to survive on this limited diet. Their slow pace is also a defense mechanism; by remaining still and blending into their surroundings, sloths can avoid detection by predators. Sloths possess long, curved claws that are perfectly designed for hanging from branches. They spend most of their lives suspended upside down, where their unique physiology, including a specialized circulatory system, prevents blood from pooling in their heads. This arboreal lifestyle also affects their digestion; the slow processing of their food can take days, leading to a long retention time in their digestive tracts. Another intriguing aspect of sloth biology is their symbiotic relationship with algae. The greenish tint of a sloth's fur often comes from algae, which provides camouflage in the dense foliage of the rainforest. In turn, the algae benefit from the sloth's habitat, gaining a surface to thrive on. This relationship illustrates the interconnectedness of ecosystems and highlights the delicate balance of life in the rainforest. Despite their charming appearance and ecological significance, sloths face numerous threats. Habitat destruction, climate change, and poaching are major challenges impacting their populations. Conservation efforts are essential to ensure that these unique animals continue to thrive in their natural habitats. In conclusion, sloths are remarkable animals with distinct adaptations that enable them to survive in a challenging environment. Their slow lifestyle, unique physiology, and ecological relationships make them a subject of fascination and importance in the study of biodiversity. Protecting sloths and their habitats is crucial for maintaining the health of tropical ecosystems and preserving these extraordinary creatures for future generations.

🌷 It's Biodiversity Week this Greener NHS Month! 🌷 We love to boast about the biodiversity across our Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust sites, including our efforts to boost biodiversity at Hopewood Park! 🌾 The grounds and gardens team at Hopewood Park have had a real focus on getting the site into top shape over the past year. Not only is it looking great for patients, staff and visitors but there’s been a boost to biodiversity too. The teams have worked to improve the borders and beds with 2,000 shrubs being planted with a focus on plants that not only look good for people on site but that are attractive to pollinators too. In addition over 80 tonnes of bark has been added to the beds and borders. This has multiple benefits including allowing the soil to retain water, reducing the need to use this precious resource on plants. It also reduces the amount of weeds coming through which eliminates the need for any chemical weed controls. Where possible bark has been used from trees which have been cut down elsewhere on our sites, although trees are never cut down unless necessary of course. Various areas on site were left for No Mow May and this resulted in six species of wildflower growing through where it would previously have been cut back. Those areas have been cut back ready for next year, as it is a bit of a myth that wild spaces are ones that are just left. They need to be managed to avoid them being dominated by one species or another. One area on site has been left totally wild and hasn’t been cut since May but that is a potential site to work with the NHS forest team to be planted with trees in the future. There is lots happening on site with more to come, including looking at electric lawn mowers and strimmer’s, to reduce noise but also to cut down on emissions. All these changes have been masterminded in the Estates office at Hopewood Park which itself has a green roof to minimise rainwater run off. These changes not only help support better care by delivering quality grounds and gardens for patients, staff and visitors, but also serve to reduce our impact on the environment. #Greenernhs
