Our Apprenticeship Manager Rachel Willis MCIPD attended the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) Apprenticeship Forum today. As always, she has enjoyed meeting and networking with fire service colleagues again at this annual event. An important subject addressed was the Level 3 Community Safety Advisor Apprenticeship, which has been under revision and has now entered the consultation stage. The review has been undertaken to align with the Person-Centred Framework, safe and well visits and the Safeguarding Fire Standard. Community Safety Advisors work to educate their communities through advice and guidance, aiming to improve behaviours and create safer environments. Individuals may progress within the fire service to advisor, inspector or other operational roles. For those in the housing industry and partners, being a part of this consultation could prove beneficial for your business. Ensuring that future employees undertaking this apprenticeship are supported to gain all the relevant skills and knowledge required. The #ElectricalSkillsIndex dataset - built by ECA - Excellence in Electrotechnical and Engineering Services - analyses how many people in England are starting electrical classroom-only courses compared to apprenticeships. A shocking number of areas in England are facing a shortage of electrical skills. ECA - Excellence in Electrotechnical and Engineering Services
There’s a national shortage of qualified electricians. People across England want to become electricians and enrol on classroom-only courses, but they aren’t progressing into apprenticeships. 12 months after finishing these courses, only 10% are securing an apprenticeship to complete their training as electricians! You need hands on experience to qualify as an electrician. Our #ElectricalSkillsIndex analyses how many people in England are starting electrical classroom-only courses compared to apprenticeships. Investment in and promotion of these and other apprenticeships is vital to close the skills gap we are experiencing. Take a look below:

More Electricians needed. We need more electrical apprenticeships, to have this we need more electrical tutors, to get that we need to close the gap between Tutor's pay and Electricians pay, and the only way to do that is to increase the per month funding for Electrical apprenticeships, which has not changed since 2017. I am really proud of our work supporting the ECA - Excellence in Electrotechnical and Engineering Services in their critical campaign to tackle the urgent shortage of electricians. Electricians are vital for integrating and maintaining green technologies like EV chargers and solar panels, yet the current skills pipeline is failing to meet demand. Shockingly, only 10% of students who complete classroom-only electrical courses move on to apprenticeships—the essential step to gaining the hands-on experience needed to qualify as an electrician. Without addressing this gap, we risk leaving many regions, especially those represented by Labour MPs, without the skilled workforce required to achieve net-zero, break down the barriers to opportunity and drive economic growth. This campaign is a standout example of WA Communications sector expertise across energy and education, showcasing how we bring campaigns to life using a mix of public affairs, digital media and creative tactics. If you’re an MP or parliamentary staffer, reach out to learn more about the electrical skills pipeline in your constituency and how we can work together to fix the fault. #SkillsForTheFuture #RechargingElectricalSkills #WACommunications

Definitely a skills shortage, in my role as as electrical tutor, I also hear a lot of negativity about poor work ethics of apprentices and a reluctance from some to take new blood on. It's definitely not all bad of course - there are some real gems as well! But as an industry we all need to work together, truly value the next generation and not treat them as cheap labour. We need to invest our time, skills, work ethos and yes possibly money in developing the next generation. Ask yourselves, if you have apprentice, what have you done to engage with their trainers? Have you gone into there training environment (college) and engaged with the tutors and there contempories. Could you support them a bit more.?
