A group of twelve A-Level History and Spanish pupils visited Bishop Auckland on Friday. The opportunity to view the remarkable collection of paintings and sculptures at the Spanish Gallery enhanced their appreciation of the Golden Age of Spain. The historians' study of the English Reformation was illuminated by the religious artifacts at the Faith Museum. However, the highlight was the tour of Auckland Palace, the historical home of the Prince-Bishops of Durham. Fittingly, the twelve Durham School pupils sat at the episcopal dining table in the same room as Francisco de Zurbaran's famous series 'Jacob and his Twelve Sons.'

Mudéjar art is characteristic of a specific geographic region: the Iberian Peninsula and especially Spain. It arose from the enlightened will of the Catholic rulers to employ the techniques and know-how of Muslim craftsmen who – after waves of post-Reconquista violence – were allowed to stay, and whose architectural achievements had fascinated the monarchy and the wider Christian nobility. Dear All, May I draw your attention to my new book in Spanish about the history and memory of communism in post-communist Romania. It is published by Editorial de Humanidades in Bogota, Columbia and it was translated by Miguel Angel Gomez Mendoza. Foreword by Cristian Vasile. Here is a short summary: The studies collected in this book aimed at explaining the evolution and characteristics of the Romanian communist regime; its consequences for today’s world, as well as public and private representations of communism in the post-communist era. The volume opens with a brief history of the regime, to focus on the various aspects of the memory of communism in the post-communist epoch. It focuses in particular on post-communist memorial regimes by analyzing reparatory and compensatory laws, listing the main vectors of memory while highlighting the public and private stakes of the memory of communism. This book takes a particular look at the memory of repression and its incarnations through museums and memorials. Best regards,
