Fight against Menstrual Poverty 2.0 Menstrual poverty is a significant barrier for many underprivileged girls, affecting their health, education, and self-esteem. Too many girls miss school each month due to a lack of access to affordable, sanitary menstrual products. This disrupts their education, causing them to fall behind academically and, in many cases, to drop out of school altogether. Our project, Pad1000, aims to provide 1000 reusable pads to these girls, offering a sustainable solution to this pressing issue. Reusable pads are cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and provide a reliable means for girls to manage their periods with dignity. True dignity through sustainability Today, we witnessed another inspiring moment as Jean Anderson, Founder of One Woman At A Time, distributed sustainable and renewable sanitary products to young girls and women in the community. Access to proper menstrual care is a critical but often overlooked issue in the fight against gender-based violence and inequality. For many girls, the lack of sanitary products leads to school absenteeism, shame, and even unsafe practices, further perpetuating cycles of poverty and vulnerability. By providing reusable sanitary products, Jean and the team are not only addressing immediate needs but also: Promoting sustainability by reducing waste. Offering a cost-effective solution for families. Restoring dignity and confidence to girls, allowing them to attend school without interruption. These products are more than just items—they are tools for empowerment, breaking down barriers to education and opportunity. Jean’s hands-on approach reminds us of the importance of listening to the needs of women and girls and providing practical, sustainable solutions to help them thrive. This International Day of the Girl Child, we want to bring attention to how young girls are disproportionately affected by global crises such as climate change, conflict and poverty❗ One example of this is in the domain of sanitation and hygiene, where social stigma surrounding menstruation and lack of access to menstrual hygiene products impact young girls’ attendance at school, hindering their chances at future social and economic mobility. 🩸 This is why interventions looking to make inclusive change must take gender into consideration. In Ethiopia, the project Strengthening Climate Resilience Systems in Water Sanitation Hygiene (SCRS-WaSH) accounts for this dimension by supporting local businesses that produce and sell menstrual hygiene products and providing reusable menstrual hygiene kits to 150 schools. 🚺 A total of 34,177 girls are projected to receive these hygiene kits over the course of the project. ✅ It doesn’t stop there — the project has also produced and disseminated educational materials to create awareness and break down taboos surrounding menstruation. 📚 These materials are targeted towards both girls and boys as well as teachers and parents. Over the last four decades, FINCA has helped millions of #RuralWomen invest in their farming businesses. We know there is more to do. According to the United Nations, farm yields could increase by as much as 30% if women had the same access to resources as men. Empowering Girls and Young Women Through Sustainable Menstrual Solutions Period poverty remains a significant barrier to education and self-esteem for many young girls, especially in underserved regions. At Namasanda Primary School in Western Kenya, a community-led effort is making a difference. With the support of TERJA Foundation, three students and their mothers initiated a project to create and distribute reusable sanitary pads. 🚀 The Impact So Far: 250+ reusable pads produced. 50 students equipped with sets of 5 reusable pads. Improved school attendance and boosted self-confidence among girls. This initiative provides more than just pads; it offers dignity and hope. Girls who once struggled with school absences due to limited access to menstrual products now attend confidently, focusing on their education and future. This shift not only enhances academic performance but fosters resilience and empowerment within the community. A lack of sanitation products, contribute to period poverty and negatively impact female education with menstruating students missing up school. Period poverty affects women and girls and it prevents them from managing their menstruation period normally. Stigmas surrounding menstruation have existed for many years, affecting girls and women, most people in different vulnerable communities neglect or don’t care about issues of menstrual issues and hygiene. And it’s not uncommon for women and girls to internalize these destructive myths. We intervene by carrying out programmes incorporating access to sanitation products alongside education to tackle period poverty and improve women’s health and female education. In the heart of Mutoko, deep in Chiutsi rural village, a group of 37 determined women has turned adversity into opportunity. Faced with the crippling effects of an El Niño-induced drought, which has brought hunger and hardship to their community, these women have banded together to reclaim their future.
