It was amazing meeting and speaking at the hotel sector workshop yesterday organized by the Dual TVET Program at KEPSA. Here are some thoughts I expressed in the meeting - "The key quests for such a dual TVET program points to the #youth #unemployment crisis in the country. About 2.97 million Kenyans are jobless with 50% of them being between the ages of 18 and 29 years. The leading cause of this crisis is the deficiency in #employability #skills among young people; however, the #TVET sector demonstrates a positive trajectory in eradicating this problem only if more investment is pointed towards the sector. The hotel industry, with its diverse operational needs, is uniquely positioned to provide a robust training ground for TVET students. By partnering with educational institutions, hotels offer real-world experience in areas such as #hospitality #management, #culinary arts, #housekeeping, and #customerservice. This ensures that the students acquire not only technical skills but also soft skills like communication and teamwork." Read more: https://t.co/mjB4NrjL5A

The forum brought together over 70 key decision makers in the #hospitality sector including the owners of hotels and human resources to discuss the value to their businesses brought by #collaborating and supporting #industry-led skilling of the #TVET students. We're just back from Barcelona and the Seafood Expo Global (SEG24). As always, a whirlwind of seafood conversations, stakeholders, initiatives, conference sessions and most impressively exhibitors! We started the week with a team face-to-face core group meeting, where the big topics included our forthcoming public consultation, discussions on our ongoing beta trials as well as continuing ongoing conversations on governance, funding and staffing. Throughout the 3-day Seafood Expo (23-25 April) we had numerous meetings with new and existing partners, contacts and initiatives. The underlaying theme to all those conversations was small-scale fisheries and how to work collaboratively to enhance their visibility within spaces like these and generally in the global seafood market. We're most certainly tired but happy to say that after Barcelona we have many new and/or deepened collaborations, new opportunities and a to-do list to keep them all moving! Thanks to everyone who made time to meet and who has helped inspire and inform our next steps! #barcelona #seafood #SustainableFishing #Sustainability #OceanAction #FairTrade #OceanLover #MarineLife #Seafood #SocialResponsibility #SupplyChains #OurOceans #Fisheries #SmallScaleFisheries #EquitableOceans #CoastalCommunities #SustainableSeas #SmallScaleFishers #FoodTechnology

The jury appreciated that Crete's bid: - integrates the six different focus areas of IGCAT; - has had a genuine development with multiple stakeholders participating; - Includes plans for Crete’s participation in IGCAT joint projects that show a commitment to the European dimension; - presents a long-term lasting legacy for the region; - shows a strong commitment from the regional partners to sustainability and quality food products; The jury agreed that the exceptional food and hospitality found in Crete, the culture and indeed harmony of culture, heritage and well-being makes Crete’s application extremely strong. Therefore, based on the written application and visit to the region, the jury decided that Crete should be recommended for the title European Region of Gastronomy 2026. There has been a formidable change in attitudes towards Norway's food traditions in recent years. Today, we celebrate what is uniquely Norwegian in modern and untraditional ways. When it comes to food and drink in Norway, a culinary revolution has been quietly taken place in the last few years. Restaurants and ordinary kitchens have seen a dramatic rise in local and organic food. What really characterizes Norwegian cooking is largely found in our rather unique agricultural customs: sheep, cows and goats graze in outlying pastures along the coast and in the mountains. A cold climate and unpolluted land are ideal for slow growing vegetables and fruit and berries without the extensive use of pesticides. Modest farms and smallholdings that produce milk, cheese and beef in healthy environments are virtually disease-free and subject to strict regulations when it comes to animal welfare. And of course the extensive coastline gives Norway long and rich seafood traditions. Book your Food adventure to Norway on www.sagavikingtours.com

Incorporating community values into destination development. In Inuvik, Nunavut, an old ice rink turned greenhouse is more than just a creative solution—it’s a powerful blend of innovation and traditional knowledge aimed at maintaining food security and self-sufficiency in one of the world’s most challenging environments. Be inspired by food solutions (and culinary tourism) in the north. https://lnkd.in/gbHYT4VZ

The Irish Self Catering Federation (ISCF), the representative body for more than 6,500 self-catering properties in Ireland, has welcomed the decision by the Elected Members of Clare County Council to request the Government to pause the proposed roll-out of the Short-Term Tourist Lettings (STTL) Register. The Motion, which was passed at the March Monthly Meeting of Clare County Council on Monday, is seeking a derogation from government, also referred to as the Grandfather Rule in the UK, for all existing self-catering businesses to continue operating. The national online registration system, which is scheduled to be rolled out by Fáilte Ireland this summer, will require all proprietors who offer short term tourist lettings to register their properties annually, a move the ISCF says will have exacerbate the existing acute tourism accommodation shortage in the West of Ireland in particular. Máire ní Mhurchú, Chair of the Irish Self Catering Federation said there is a critical shortage of available bed nights in many counties and an urgent need for clear planning guidelines around the development of glamping and other self-catering businesses to be established. Here more from Maire and the ISCF on RTÉ Drivetime this evening (Wednesday). Further info - https://lnkd.in/dAszb3qF Photo by Eamon Ward #selfcatering #tourismindustry #shorttermrentals
