🚀Government Urges Big Corporates and Unicorns to Establish Incubators for Manufacturing Startups! The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has urged major corporates and unicorns to establish incubators for manufacturing startups in a move to nurture innovation and drive economic growth. Companies like Apple, Tata Group, Hyundai, Skoda, Maruti, boAT, Moglix, Meesho, and EaseMyTrip have been approached to support this initiative. These incubators will provide startups with mentorship, advanced facilities, and funding opportunities, creating a win-win scenario for both corporates and startups. The DPIIT's memo outlines various funding avenues, including government programs, co-investment models, and CSR funds. This initiative is part of a broader effort to increase the manufacturing sector's contribution to the economy, supported by production-linked incentive (PLI) schemes across 14 key sectors. A Rs 300 Cr Series A round in #India Indian consumer electronics startup, Indkal Technologies, recently raised a Rs 300 Cr Series A round. In today's time when venture funding is tight, it's one of the largest Series A rounds. It's even more interesting that this is the company's first round. Indkal is not your typical consumer brand startup. It's a 4-year-old company (founded in 2020) that started with manufacturing consumer electronics for global players. Such traditional manufacturing companies don't attract tech VCs. Once they attain significant size, they raise private equity capital. VCs prefer investing in brands. Indkal followed a hybrid model. Once it developed manufacturing know-how after working for global consumer electronics companies, it launched an in-house brand. Now, it manufactures for third parties and sells wearable and audio products under its brand, Wobble. This brings us to the question what are #startups? Most industry experts agree that startups are fast-growing private (unlisted) companies. Growth defines startups. Indkal's growth has been phenomenal. As per the news reports, its FY24 revenue was Rs 800 Cr including Rs 300 Cr from Wobble sales. Most startups take decades to achieve such revenue. Indkal did it in 4 years. However, Indkal is not a typical consumer brand startup. It's a hybrid company that started with third-party manufacturing and then launched its brand after developing manufacturing and supply chain expertise. Now it does both. It's a novel model to follow. Indkal's investor, Aries, is also not a typical VC. It's a private equity fund that invests in larger companies. It found Indkal's manufacturing expertise, consumer brand play and high growth exciting. IMO, it's a great sign for the Indian economy that manufacturing companies like Indkal are attracting capital in relatively early stages. The private equity playbook is built around #investing in more mature companies with years of experience. Eventually, it was high growth that worked in Indkal's favour. Nothing speaks like growth to investors. It's the biggest validation. Note: We are starting our 7th Founder Fundraising Workshop on the 22nd & 23rd of June.
