The upcoming FDA guidelines for pulse oximeters, while a step forward, may not go far enough to address racial bias in healthcare. Research shows pulse oximeters are three times more likely to miss dangerously low oxygen levels in Black patients than in white patients, leading to delayed care and worse outcomes. This disparity was especially evident during the COVID-19 pandemic when Black Americans faced higher mortality rates and delayed treatment, a trend also seen in the UK. Although the FDA plans to recommend testing oximeters on diverse populations, it may not require testing under real-world conditions that affect accuracy, such as poor circulation, which is more common in Black communities. Without this, oximeters could continue to fail those who need accurate readings the most. To truly solve this issue, the healthcare industry must prioritise developing more accurate, alternative vital signs monitoring tools that serve all patients equally. Only then can we ensure fair, reliable care for everyone. Read more ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eBMG6J8K #healthcare #digitalhealth #healthmonitoring

For decades, pulse oximetry has been the industry standard for monitoring blood oxygen levels – but could better alternatives soon be available? Among the most common concerns around pulse oximeters is accuracy – an issue that is amplified for patients with darker skin tones. A recent review, commissioned by the UK Government and conducted by a panel of experts put pulse oximetry, and the potential for racial bias as a result of its use, squarely in the spotlight. Among its key recommendations: encouraging efforts to develop new devices with greater accuracy and performance in monitoring for all skin types. We believe in-ear canal monitoring could hold the most potential to address these challenges; EarMetrics aims to provide accurate, consistent vital signs monitoring that could lead to more equitable healthcare outcomes. #healthcare #digitalhealth #healthmonitoring

The Alarming Truth About Pulse Oximeters and Racial Disparities in Healthcare A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) revealed that pulse oximeters, widely used to measure oxygen levels, can be less accurate for individuals with darker skin tones. The study found that pulse oximeters overestimated oxygen saturation by 3% in Black patients, leading to delayed or inadequate treatment. This inaccuracy can exacerbate existing health disparities and have fatal consequences. The NHS Race and Health Observatory recommends that healthcare providers take immediate action to address these disparities, including using alternative methods to measure oxygen saturation. Pulse oximeters can quickly and accurately give health care providers the information they need to save lives. It is a simple technology with enormous power - reliably detect low oxygen levels in the blood and signal a critical need for oxygen therapy. It is the gateway to #OxygenAccess. But across many countries, health care providers continue to lack access to these helpful tools. Many patients continue to lose lives to hypoxemia because it is not diagnosed accurately or in time. Scaling up access to pulse oximetry, as part of oxygen delivery systems, is one of the most effective, and critical, actions that decision-makers can take to improve health outcomes.
