In recent weeks, there has been promising news regarding the utilization of #precisionfermentation for the production of animal-identical dairy proteins. Nestle’s Orgain introduced “Better Whey,” while Unilever’s Breyers unveiled “lactose-free ice cream,” both incorporating Perfect Day's dairy-identical β-Lactoglobulin (whey) protein. Additionally, DSM and Fonterra’s joint venture, Vivici, have secured the supply of their nature-identical whey protein with a leucine content 1.7 times higher than dairy-based whey. This indicates a trend in 2024 of companies launching more precision-fermentation-based products. Next week, I will be attending the Bioprocessing Summit Europe (19-21 March) in Barcelona, where I will be delivering a presentation on the economic aspects of the process and strategies for reducing costs to achieve more competitive prices compared to animal-derived counterparts. Recently, the Danish biotechnology company 21st.BIO has announced that its precision fermented beta-lactoglobulin has received self-affirmed Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status in the United States.
