A new satellite designed to detect ‘dark vessels’ at sea is expected to launch in mid-2025 following the successful completion of its Critical Design Review (CDR). According to its developers in the U.K., Horizon Technologies, the Amber-2 Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) satellite is designed to detect vessels associated with illegal immigration, illegal fishing activities, drug smuggling, ship-to-ship transfers of goods and sanction evasion. Its developers explained that Amber satellites detect radio frequency (RF) signals, which enable the identification of satphones and navigation radars. There has been a significant surge in GPS jamming incidents around the eastern Mediterranean Sea over the past few days, while more than 100 cargo-carrying vessels appeared to show up at Beirut airport on Thursday.Vessels sailing in the eastern Mediterranean first started showing up at this airport — on land — at the end of October. An average of 35 ships operating in the region were being impacted each day in March. However, this figure jumped to 74 on April 3 and climbed to 117 on April 4. Cairo International airport is another spoofed destination in which ships are appearing in, with 45 vessels signalling it as their location yesterday. The appearance of ships in seemingly impossible locations is a result of global navigation satellite system jamming and is a type of spoofing. A third-party actor broadcasts a powerful signal, which overrides information received from GPS satellites in orbit, thereby impacting Automatic Identification System data. Third-party spoofing that is caused by GPS jamming generally affects multiple vessels in a small area. The AIS positions tend to centre on singular areas such as airports, buildings, or in some cases the middle of nowhere.The Black Sea is another common area for GPS jamming as Russia works to disrupt Ukrainian offensive operations. The number of vessels appearing in Moscow airport skyrocketed in January and have remained at high volumes.

#China: unveiled the YLC-2E #antistealth #radar and the "#SpiderWeb" low-altitude surveillance and countermeasures system. The YLC-2E radar has anti-stealth capabilities and is being launched for the international market. Unlike traditional anti-stealth radars that rely on low frequency bands (i.e., "metric wave radar"), YLC-2E adopts a new design concept to achieve powerful anti-stealth capabilities through energy and intelligent algorithms. According to experts, the detection effect of YLC-2E radar is equivalent to that of "traditional" frequency band anti-stealth radars such as YLC-8B/YLC-8E. So, does the emergence of YLC-2E mean that "traditional" frequency band anti-stealth methods are "obsolete"? #Chinese experts said that frequency-band anti-stealth radars such as YLC-2E and YLC-8B/YLC-8E are not substitutes but complementary. The cost of low-frequency radars such as measuring-wave radars is advantageous, while the YLC-2E has more comprehensive performance and diverse uses, and its detection accuracy can more efficiently support the anti-stealth combat system. The "#SpiderWeb" low-altitude surveillance and countermeasures system is based on detection and identification. It is a complete system mainly composed of command and control equipment, radar, photoelectric, electronic reconnaissance, jamming and 5G-A, which can achieve coordinated detection, blind zone integration and continuous coverage. Its low-altitude surveillance radar "Spider Web" can quickly discover, stably track and intelligently identify various types of aircraft, birds, vehicles and other low-altitude targets in complex environments all day long. The altitude weather support system adopts a layered design. The architecture design includes low-altitude atmospheric monitoring equipment networks, three-dimensional digital flow field reconstruction, small- and micro-scale weather forecasting, and low-altitude weather service platforms. Almost everyone uses GPS* either directly or indirectly in their day-to-day lives. Your phone's location services, vehicle navigation, delivery services, and many of our other modern technologies rely on knowing the locations of certain devices or people. Because of the proliferation of GPS technologies and their integration into daily life, they are increasingly under threat. These threats come in the form of jamming, i.e., making GPS just not work, and spoofing, tricking GPS devices into giving the wrong location data. These threats are particularly insidious in that they aren't only used during a "hot" war; they can be turned on and cause havoc before you know they're coming. This was the topic of a conversation documented in the article below at the Department of Transportation’s annual Civil GPS Service Interface Committee meeting. *As always, I use GPS as a placeholder for all of the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). There is an increasing amount of detected disturbances to satellite navigation signals using both spoofing and jamming of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). More recently Finland’s Coast Guard said it has detected constant disturbances to satellite navigation signals in Finland and the Baltic Sea region since April 2024. The Coast Guard stated that the GNSS jamming (emitting strong radio frequency signals that prevents receivers from receiving any position data) has led to ships getting lost at sea or losing their course by causing malfunctions in the vessel’s Automatic Identification Systems (AIS), which enable electronic navigation. The amount of spoofing (transmitting false signals tricking receivers into calculating incorrect positions) is also currently on the rise as different types of spoofing has increased by 82% during the past two years. The solution to these problems is adding digital signatures to the AIS messages to enable verification of senders, but the current AIS technology does not have capacity to add digital signatures to AIS. However, a new standard called VDES sometimes referred to as AIS 2.0 adds new data channels that can be used to authenticate AIS messages by using digital signatures. The new VDES technology standard in combination with a supplementary Maritime Connectivity Platform (MCP) and its Maritime Messaging Service (MMS) contain the necessary features to provide sender authentication and the necessary Private Key Infrastructure (PKI) for all marine services. The use of VDES and MMC/MMS in combination is recommended by recent IALA guidelines. The first VDES enabled satellites are in orbit and a new satellite operator Sternula is the pioneer and frontrunner in enabling this new technology standard becoming a reality to provide safety and environmental impact in the maritime industry.
