Announcing our most recent investment in Etched, a company building purpose-built artificial intelligence chips that consume 93% less energy than state of the art chips available in the market today. In 2022, it was estimated that AI processing consumed 460 terawatt hours of electricity, and the International Energy Agency (IEA) expects this to double in just four years. Data centers could be using a total of 1,000 terawatts hours annually by 2026. “This demand is roughly equivalent to the electricity consumption of Japan,” says the IEA. Etched chips are specifically optimized for transformer model inference, leading to a 15x increase in throughput and a 15x improvement in energy consumption.
